George Parker : Media Bistro to bombard you with all kinds of spam

April 24, 2008

George Parker has some interesting things to say about the recent Agency spy switch to the main Media Bistro site. I know for a fact that he is friends with the authors and editors there… so this isn’t a slam on them.. it’s on the parent company, Media Bistro. We have the Agency Spy authors on IM.. and send them leads all the time and sometimes it’s vice versa… this isn’t about them.. it’s about the orders they got from above.

Recently Media Bistro implemented (forced on the authors) a no-link out policy via blog roll in what could be defined as the worst possible decision from an SEO standpoint… using sophomoric logic that they will ‘horde page rank’.. either they have an idiot as an SEO expert on board… or they themselves are pure idiots..

We have been doing SEO as our full time job for over a decade… We’ll give them some free advice… linking out to related content (within reason) actually increases your relevancy for many keyword searches. Oh Noes… was that a bad decision on Media Bistro’s part?

It was nothing more than a slap in the face to us.

We kept and updated our blog roll to continue to point to them… out of respect for the editors , Superspy and Ondownlow…

So in essence they upset many of their partners (you know, the ones partially responsible for their increased search engine rankings due to the link back on blog roll)… then they went on to move the stable wordpress site to this horrible windows hosted platform that has more bugs than Vista. In this day and age who hosts on Windows anyway?

All sorts of problems occurred with this, from the new platform not supporting simple things like trackbacks to pissed off partners that linked to the site… The implementation was horrific to say the least..

Amazing how poorly Media Bistro runs their shop over there…

changes at Agency Spy will ultimately kill the site. I never cease to be amazed at how many companies think they can come in and take something which started off as a free-form exchange of ideas, interests and information, then lard it up with ads or even worse, subtle ways of selling your personal information off to third parties

I did wonder why the links out had gone, interesting to see it was policy! The ads are fine - it needs to be paid for if someone is earning money for writing it, but considering the web is links, removing them is shortsighted.

NEVER signup for any kind of mailing list from Media Bistro. You will be bombarded with newsletters galore. I have tried to unscribe and yet still get the frequent newsletters from them.
