cdbags : Publicis Groupe issues press release about Cannes awards
June 30, 2009
Honestly I think with attendance down to a fraction of what it was a few years ago, it’s not even worth the funds for the press release. Regardless here is their self promotional bit…
A comment from one of our tipsters : “The PR release forgets to mention how many knee pads they went through in Cannes as well”
PARIS, June 30 — The 56th annual Cannes Lions International Festival has ended on a very positive note for Publicis Groupe. For the third year in a row, the Groupe is ranked the second most creative groupe with wins of an impressive 101 Lions. Publicis Groupe ranked second after Omnicom in terms of number of prizes, and before WPP.
Publicis Groupe agencies took 1 Grand Prix (Promo), 21 Gold, 25 Silver, and 46 Bronze Lions in total. The Groupe’s creative talent was recognized in all catagories, particularly in Film (16 Lions), Titanium & Integrated (2 Lions), Press (9 Lions), Outdoor (14 Lions), Cyber (8 Lions), Promo (8 Lions), Radio (4 Lions), Media (18 Lions), Direct (5 Lions), PR (7 Lions) and Design (10 Lions). Both Fallon and BBH won an impressive 2 and 9 Lions respectively. VivaKi recorded 9 Lions, 7 Lions for Starcom MediaVest Group and 2 Lions for Zenith Optimedia. The juries also rewarded the creative talent of MS&L with 1 Lion.
Leo Burnett scooped the third place position in the network of the year category.
Publicis Groupe is also recognized on the international scene as the most creative group in France thanks to the impressive performance of Publicis France. Marcel was the most awarded French agency. The agency won the only Gold Lion in Film and three Lions in Outdoor. Publicis Net was the most awarded French digital agency and won the only Gold Lion in Cyber.
In addition, Publicis Groupe Young Talents were recognized with 9 Young Lions.
Maurice Levy, Chairman & CEO of Publicis Groupe, welcomed the news: << Publicis Groupe is extremely proud for its employees and its clients. These results attest to the creative quality of the Groupe. Ranked the number one group in creative performance since 2004 by The Gunn Report and the second most awarded group at the Cannes Festival since 2007, Publicis Groupe is recognized by its peers for its creative talent and by its clients for its brand image and performances' contribution.>>

cdbags : Hill Holliday wins Silver at Cannes - calls newspaper
June 29, 2009
“Boston ad agency Hill Holliday said it has won a Silver Lion at Cannes for “Father’s Day,” a film it created for Liberty Mutual, the Boston-based insurance company” according to The Boston Globe
The Same Liberty Mutual that was doing the irresponsible act profiting from traffic regarding the row between Agency Spy and the death of Paul Tilley.
This was the copy they were using last year on Adwords.

4 year old explains Star Wars in Legos
June 29, 2009
4 year old wanted to explain Star Wars to me, He then proceeded to recreate The Return of the Jedi with Luke Skywalker vs Darth Vader.
Clearly the battle is raging in it’s Lego format.
1 - Luke Skywalker vs Darth Vader
2 - “Good guys base”
3 - Creator of the artwork
Help from Dad was limited to advice on how to stabilize it and “where does the control panel go”

Microsoft puts digital ad agency Razorfish for sale
June 29, 2009
Microsoft Corp. plans to sell its digital advertising agency Razorfish and has appointed Morgan Stanley to find a buyer. The report was initially released by the UK based Financial Times
The French Advertising Agency Holding company Publicis Groupe - was cited as being interested in buying the digital ad agency.
This actually was the most interesting part of the report:
“One analyst valued Razorfish at $600m-$700m, based on sales of about $400m last year and profit margins for similar businesses of 12-13 per cent. “Much more than that would be overpaying,” the analyst said, adding that even in digital marketing, valuations had fallen since last year.”
Razorfish never made sense for Microsoft… and based on how Publicis runs it’s digital assets, it might not make sense for them either. Perhaps it would make sense to spin it off as a separate company.. Make matters worse was that Razorfish was pushing out Linux based websites for their clients… and being owned by Microsoft made it all so much worse.
Clearly the Holding companies never had much success in digital.. hell they can’t even define it yet.

Pizza Hut + The Hut = bad advertising
June 27, 2009
This is perhaps the photo that sums up the entire Pizza Hut vs The Hut advertising mess.. the Ad Agency that came up with this mess should be fired on the spot.
Title : The Hut - Pizza - Pasta - Wings
Sub Title : Thanks for Choosing Pizza Hut!
Body : Check out more great deals inside…
So is it “The Hut” or is it “Pizza Hut” considering both labels are on the ad?
I got this photo from having dinner with my family last week at their house for Father’s day,
Asking my Mom and Dad “where did you get the Pizza?”
Mom promptly replied “Pizza Hut, where they charged me $30 dollars for two pies.”
I said “Are you sure it’s Pizza Hut?”
She said “yes of course”
Even though they changed the multi-thousand dollar sign a few days prior… she didn’t even notice…. good branding campaign.. So powerful that most people outside the industry didn’t even notice.
And it doesn’t help to send mixed messages on your advertising, with the words “The Hut” and “Pizza Hut” on the same ad.
What a terrible idea…. just terrible..

Richards Group faces Florida Citrus Review
June 26, 2009
The following day, Crist said he believed “every contract should be openly bid, every time,” a spokesman said. The Ledger is reporting
It’s a complete political mess with the Richards Group, evidently they are politically connected and questions are raised why they can’t shop around for a better agency.
At the commission’s last meeting May 20 in Lakeland, Keck recommended renewing the existing Richards Group contract until Dec. 30, 2013. The five-year contract, which expires Tuesday, caps payments to Richards at $1.8 million a year and has a five-year renewal option.
Interesting… if you know the right people….

Ugly, outch and game over… we view his position as optimistic at best.
This recession is not only pushing everything to digital, but it’s not going to recover… ever.. for traditional. “After this recession, the horse and buggy market will recover” It will… but it went to the Automobile.

Burger King under fire for the 7 incher
June 24, 2009
EDIT: Gawker got this message from Burger King.
Burger King Corporation (BKC) values and respects all of its guests. This advertisement is running to support a limited promotion in the Singapore market and is not running in the U.S. or any other markets. It was produced by a locally-based Singapore agency and not by BKC’s U.S. advertising agency of record, Crispin Porter and Bogusky.
The New Burger King Ad has created the campaign in bid to shift the mighty burger.
The problem at hand is that I have a 4 year old… and I don’t necessarily feel okay going to Burger King to get a kids meal for him (which by the way are Transformer Toys now) with that ad hanging up in front of the store…
Seriously, …. think of Burger King’s target market… there is a reason they spend millions promoting (and buying) kids toys in their happy meals…. floating out a BJ as an ad isn’t necessarily the right course of action…. in fact you have one parent (myself) doing a mini-boycott now of the store… I can’t go in there with that sitting there..
Yea he’s 4 years old…. the chances are good that he won’t get it…. but some of his friends aged 7 and 10 most likely will….. and they still want transformer toys…. so good job on this one… idiots.
So you know, this is him dancing to a McDonalds Happy Meal CD that they handed out a few months ago in their kids meals.
