New Fad : Submit a virus and malware app directly to Digg
November 30, 2007
Generally speaking Digg is one of my favorite sites. Until I get this… I clicked on an upcoming story, it opens wine and attempts to run a windows executable.
Looking deeper I found that it wasn’t even the URL that was submitted. It appears that the malicious author of the post submitted what would be considered a fairly interesting wordpress article… then after submitting it modified his .htaccess file to redirect to the malware.
So the site cleared all the normal checks for the submission, it gained a few diggs and rose in the upcoming stories, then it was switched to malware.
I of course reported the post to Digg, and I am not going to let everyone know what the malware page is on… the last thing you need is more viruses anyway on your box.
Classic Bait and switch, what’s innovative with it is that the person actually waited until the story was on upcoming before he did his switch. My fear is that he will wait next time until it hits the main page.

Hulu is my favorite TV Station
November 30, 2007
We know we slammed Hulu’s terms and conditions
We know we made fun of them. We know that we told the planet that there is no way on earth they could make a site that works. Those Dinosaurs are only good at suing innovative technology not actually creating innovation.
We were wrong.
Hulu is my favorite TV station… and it’s not on my TV.
I just watched several of my favorite oldies but goodies… being the SciFi geek I am, I saw BattleStar Galactica (The old one) Airwolf, Buck Rogers… I feel like a kid in the 1980′s again.
NBC, you did alright this time. The streaming quality is up to par, it runs perfectly on Debian Linux using Firefox… I am happy overall. Good Job!

Advertising Agency to be front line in London’s Crime
November 30, 2007
A 100% rise in gun crime in London’s City of Westminster has added to pressure on Home Secretary Jacqui Smith to step up the fight against gang violence and firearms offenses. By Hiring an Advertising Agency.
Evidently the crime rate has hit the roof, with a 100% rise in crime. Their counter measure, hire an ad agency to tell people that shooting people in the face is bad.
Smith launched a national drive against gang violence in September and is considering whether to hire an ad agency as part of the battle.
I myself have a better idea.
Instead of spending public money to make crappy ads that Drug Dealers won’t read.. or if they do they will use it as target practice. The best bet would be to allocate those funds to fund programs to keep kids in school or offer legitimate jobs.
Putting ads up saying ‘don’t shoot people, it’s bad’ is not exactly the best use of funds. Mostly because those types of criminals already know what they are doing is wrong to extreme levels.

Deutsch Ad Agency lands Saturn — could be a very poor and expensive choice
November 29, 2007
Deutsch Advertising Agency lands Saturn, their entire InterActive Marketing Budget.
This is within hours of landing Sony for PlayStation.
We applauded Sony’s Decision they picked the right Agency, We think Saturn made a poor choice they picked the wrong agency.
In our opinion, Deutsch is not really a valid online marketer. Their site is horrific from an SEO standpoint. In fact you can’t even get into their site without a popup… this is much less SEO and more from a usability standpoint.
Agency Spy is giving them props. We do as well, for the Sony review.. but for Saturn.. online only? They are not exactly expert online marketers… at least from an SEO standpoint their addiction to flash is akin to a crack addict looking for the next fix. In essence there is NO text in their site at all. Shows as a virtual blank page in Google Text cache.
To make Matters worse, they don’t even know how to use meta tags (their site is lacking even the most basic Metas)
I don’t see how they can help Saturn, they can’t even help themselves from an SEO standpoint.

Advertising Agency of Record lasts on average less than 24 months
November 29, 2007
It appears that the Agency of Record contract never has a chance for the ink to dry before they are drafting up another one with another firm.
“Clients aren’t afraid to make changes. in fact, many seem to enjoy it as more than 40 percent of respondents said they are either ‘look forward to it’ or ‘find it exciting’ when looking for a new agency,†Sneider says. “When reviewing, 68 percent of clients saw four or more agencies, so if the prospect is aware of your agency, you might have a shot to get on the preliminary review list.
Full Story
Then this shocker
nearly 50 percent of client/agency relationships continue to last less than two years.
Now that is hot.
50% of these press releases saying “We are their agency of record” lasts under less than 2 years. It takes a few months to even get the creative on track and approved.. it takes even longer to get the proper media spots… in short.. the actual visible work that potential customers see doesn’t actually happen until 6 months into the project. Then 6 months into the project the first ads are run.
This leaves us with 18 months.. generally the ad has to appear more than 1 time for it to sink in to the potential customer.. the old school rule of thumb is 3 times at least. For that to happen it could be up to a year into the relationship.
12 months left.
Now into the final year of the relationship, we are hoping that the ad was displayed a few times, that the message got across and the customer is ready to buy. The client is looking at last years data to compare to this years, you are hoping the recession isn’t as bad as you think.. otherwise this is your final year with the client.
The numbers start to pour in with historical accuracy 18 months into the relationship.
Your numbers are messed up, not because the ads are bad.. but because the whole first year, you are still measuring the former agency of record as their branding is still in the minds of the consumer.
You have about 180 days or so of your efforts to be judged on.
Now your account is up for review, but the numbers are not bad.. they are actually pretty good for the past 6 months… but not so hot for the whole 18 months.
The client then states “your efforts have failed, since we hired you sales have been flat over the past 18 months”
You retort “but the past 6 months”
They respond “it was like that with the last agency as well”
The client’s review comes down to 4 agencies.
The Ad agencies pitching are stating the same things you did 18 months ago. Management wants a change as their past 18 months figures are flat. They keep glossing over the past 6 months because though it’s an improvement, overall they are still flat.
You lose the account to another agency, their pitch was better than your results over 18 months.
The worst thing about it, their figures are hot from month zero to month 12… they will get the renewal, for your efforts.
Enjoy the Ad Agency space.

‘They are trying to make Windows cool, relevant and Internet-centric’
November 28, 2007
Since Yesterday when Tribble Ad Agency broke the story regarding the new requirement for Microsoft’s Ad Agency. It appears that the New York Post is confirming this as well.
The players are Microsoft’s lead ad agency, McCann Erickson, is competing for the new assignment, along with Fallon, JWT and Crispin Porter & Bogusky.
They want to integrate the Advertising Agency strategy and boost the value of Windows to the average consumer and business user. The problem however is that… well… most of the consumers are stating that Vista isn’t an upgrade.. it’s a downgrade from XP.
Much less the rapid growth of Apple and Linux variations such as Ubuntu.
The point is that as it stands now, Microsoft’s marketing strategy is in shatters, and several agencies are trying to get their fingers on the $300 million dollar prize (that is what is estimated for Microsoft’s 2008 Ad budget).
Industry rumors have noted a few things about the pitches — one of the agencies pitching noted (refused to be cited) - “McCann Erickson dropped the ball before, I doubt Microsoft will give them another ball to drop”
It’s getting heated. Microsoft want’s ZERO press on the Agency review, mostly because people start asking “why is there a review in the first place?”
It’s Microsoft policy (NASDAQ : MSFT) currently not to discuss the review.
