The only positive to Digg’s new redesign

September 1, 2010

Evidently there is one positive outcome for the new Digg redesign. They didn’t import over the Microsoft imposed site ban list.

Literally to the joy of Linux users, the site sqlspace.com (The one Digg banned back in 2007 for hosting a screen shot of Ubuntu being featured on Windows Marketplace.) is now allowed to be submitted.

It was a censorship case that Digg was standing on the wrong side of, but of course they had to do as their Microsoft sponsor required. That meant for a period of roughly 5 months there were no negative stories about Microsoft, and all stories that were submitted were either buried or literally banned. Such as Sqlspace.com for hosting the below screenshot.

Enjoy the new reality.

The Art of war - Google vs Microsoft

April 27, 2010

Search Election is providing us with a hard hitting example of what it’s like to see Google vs Microsoft in Action.

http://www.searchelection.com/

The only problem is that it appears to be a stalemate no matter how hard one matches the skillset, will and drive.

It sort of makes you feel like you are playing Wargames (circa 1983) with the WOPR (Joshua).

Would you like to play a game?

Regardless it’s quite comical, and most likely the truth. Both companies have their fans and their loyalists. Granted I am partial to Google winning the game, but I might (and I stress might) still be in the minority.

Enjoy the battle… let us know if you won or not.

If you did win, make sure to send us a screen shot.. or at post it from here…

Again.. good luck…. hope you can take over the world, and don’t forget the screenshot.. We are considering a reward for the first person that can beat the computer.

Pot Calls Kettle Black - Microsoft to Google : you’re a monopoly

March 3, 2010

Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer says Google is a monopoly on Internet search. Microsoft is complaining after spending 50 cents on development and 3/4 of a billion promoting Bing / Live / MSN .

We’re actually not kidding on that 3/4 of a billion. Each iteration of the same search engine (Bing/ Live / MSN) was priced for advertising alone at about 1/4 of a billion spent on advertising for each failure. This failure was repeated 3 times so far. Already there is talk that Bing is a “failure” and another branding and domain name change is being discussed.. making it the 4th disaster in a row for the search engine… Trust me I know, I was there for the first failure. That will put the charge at 1 billion wasted on Advertising Alone…. because the root of the problem isn’t their advertising, the root of the problem is that Bing / MSN / Live (whatever you wanna call it) still is technically inferior .

Microsoft’s failure at search is mostly because they still don’t understand that the desktop isn’t online. They are glued to the proprietary model that utterly fails online.

Plus the fact that Bing still is the worst “large” search engine out there in terms of technical ranking of sites… many experts state (including myself) that Microsoft is 1/2 a decade behind Google in terms of technology.

So there you go, keep blowing money.. keep calling regulators… but at the end.. no one wants that Ford Pinto you call Bing… fix the search engine… don’t complain to the police. Seriously Microsoft you guys sound like foundem The company that’s ranking are horrible and call the police / antitrust department.

Just substitute the words “ranking” for “market share”

WTF : Ubuntu Linux to use Bing for Search

February 18, 2010

A complete WTF moment. Ubuntu Linux will by default go to Microsoft as default in Firefox installs via Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Linux’s corporate backer Canonical has signed a partnership to use Yahoo’s search results by default in the version of Firefox it ships. In turn Yahoo has signed and passed all legal hurdles to outsource it’s search to Microsoft’s bing. What you are going to see is Microsoft cutting a check to Yahoo, and Yahoo in turn forwarding that check to Ubuntu. To make matters even more confusing, Google hired Ubuntu to help code ChromeOS.

Yes, you read that right. Ubuntu selects Yahoo, Yahoo Selects Bing, Google Selects Ubuntu.

Go figure.

This is more confusing than driving in Boston.

Good Job Grey NY

February 10, 2010

Wow Digg is sending out some badly targeted ads today.

Recently I posted my personal opinion on why Microsoft / Interpublic advertising deal is bad, really bad. In fact I even titled it “Any Interpublic clients want off Microsoft’s ad system

Well a picture is worth a 1000 words right? So here is the screen shot on how P&G PANTENE media spend is literally wasting their money. In this case however it’s not Microsoft and it’s not Interpublic, it’s WPP group plc’s Grey NY. They appear to be buying ads though Nexage for Mobile, but do you consider this targeted advertising? Like beautiful hair means so much to Steve Jobs…. Of course click to enlarge the screenshot.

It’s why these big advertising agencies really shouldn’t be learning digital media spends using client money for their classes. These are amateur mistakes with client money.

Shameful.

Google to offer 1Gbps residential ISP service

February 10, 2010

It plans to build a fibre-optic network offering speeds of up to 1Gbps (gigabit per second) to up to 500,000 homes. This is in comparison to Comcast on or about 5Mpbs (if your lucky on a good day) …

1 Gbps is enough bandwidth to rid yourself of any need for installed software or a comprehensive OS. With bandwidth like that open to you, you wouldn’t even have to install a video game… you could run it live full screen though your browser with virtually no lag.

You would even be able to run photoshop and large graphic and video work without having to install the video editing software on your computer. 1 Gb video file would take 1-2 seconds to load up … roughly the same speed to the average individual as your hard drive.

Google’s reason for this is quite simple.. they are simply stating “you don’t need Microsoft Word, Google docs is just as fast (if not faster)”

If bandwidth like that was open to the general public, the need for anything Microsoft would be virtually nill.

They are really pushing for improvement, because in their eyes improvement is completely removing Microsoft from the picture.

Any Interpublic clients want off Microsoft’s ad system?

February 9, 2010

I want to start this off with a disclaimer, I am writing this as an opinion .. nothing more.. nothing less.. just my opinion on the Interpublic deal with Microsoft. As the CEO of a search and social media advertising agency I just have to call BS when I see it. This in my opinion is complete BS.

Forbes is reporting that Advertising Agency Interpublic is going to send their client money to single digit market share Bing rather than Google.

The move is widely seen as the “anything but Google option”, this is what the problem is. It’s not grounded on ROI for their clients, it’s not grounded in anything that benefits their clients. This is designed to waste their client money with a search engine that most likely will return very little ROI for their client… honestly the traffic is just not there.

“Any agency or client can chose other vendors to handle their accounts, but if they don’t specify, Microsoft will be the default.”

WTF? Measuring our log files of about the 400 sites (many of them that we manage for fortune 500 firms), we see that being on page 1 in Bing is roughly equal to page 3 in Google for the same keyword.. and honestly the use of the Google invented and perfected Microsoft Ad system is almost laughable.

Microsoft started copying the rough product of Google Adwords only a few years ago, and still really hasn’t perfected it. The ads on Digg are horrific to state the least in terms of relevancy.

Seriously Interpublic… what are you doing? Think about your clients next time.. and not yourself. If this doesn’t raise red flags across all your clients.. nothing will… seriously any interpublic clients want off that horrific ad system contact us

Steve Ballmer, did you ‘fucking kill Google’ yet?

February 3, 2010

Steve Ballmer, you know the guy that made this advertising agency quality TV ad.

Well About 1/2 a decade ago, a key individual defected from Microsoft to Google that lead to one heck of lawsuit. According to official documents, Steve said he was going to ‘fucking kill Google’ as he hurled a chair across the room. literally.

You’ll want to click to enlarge the image.

And a cut and paste of the Statement:

Prior to joining Google, I set up a meeting on or about November 11, 2004 with Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer to discuss my planned departure….At some point in the conversation Mr. Ballmer said: “Just tell me it’s not Google.” I told him it was Google.

At that point, Mr. Ballmer picked up a chair and threw it across the room hitting a table in his office. Mr. Ballmer then said: “Fucking Eric Schmidt is a fucking pussy. I’m going to fucking bury that guy, I have done it before, and I will do it again. I’m going to fucking kill Google.” ….

Thereafter, Mr. Ballmer resumed trying to persuade me to stay….Among other things, Mr. Ballmer told me that “Google’s not a real company. It’s a house of cards.”

We were just wondering Mr. Ballmer, did you ‘fucking kill Google’ yet? We figured 1/2 a decade has passed now and we were just wondering the status of it.

Now we never met Eric Schmidt, so I can’t tell you if he’s a “fucking pussy” but we never understood the term anyway? Are you talking about cats mating?

Regardless, we just wanted to know the status of the “house of cards” company called Google. Is it still around?

Microsoft to fix “mack truck sized” security hole

January 20, 2010

Evidently the pressure from the recent Google hack in China has pushed Microsoft to patch the much hated IE 6 and newer versions of Internet Explorer.

It follows the French and German governments decision to inform citizens to use other browsers such as firefox

Classic, yet the security hole filled, non-standard compliant browser still has double digit market share due to the fact that many larger companies refuse to upgrade, mostly due to laziness of their internal IT department.

There is no reason that anyone should be using that browser.. it’s a security threat to their networks. We developers have always hated that browser because it never renders webpages properly.

Go away IE 6, Microsoft should patch IE 6 with a full replacement of the browser. Not a hack to fix this single (out of many) security flaws.

Clearly Microsoft didn’t do their homework regarding Bing

January 7, 2010

Clearly, without a doubt Microsoft didn’t do their homework regarding Bing. When fortune cookies say “learn Chinese” and calls your search engine a disease it raises all sorts of red flags.

Anyone speak Chinese? Is this accurate or just some funny prank. Does the word “bing” mean Disease? If it is, it’s classic. Goes along the lines of the worst possible names for companies.

So what’s the word, does Bing mean Disease in Chinese?

If so, we could picture the advertising now:

“Use Microsoft to search for your bing” - Microsoft’s new theme

“find a cure for bing” - Google’s new Advertising

“when there’s a bing, their a cure” - Johnson and Johnson

heh…
