Publicis looking for internet button on computer
June 30, 2008
Jake Swearingen at C|Net / B|Net found the gem of the century… Evidently Publicis wants to go online… and teams up with… Google .. I mean Facebook … I mean Digg .. scratch that… Yahoo… yep Yahoo… the company that can’t even run their own Pay Per Click system and is now running Google Adsense.. You got it.. they choose that as their partner… You call this your online? A website that uses Google Adsense? I am still amazed how they are landing clients with decisions like this. Publicis perhaps you should look at these charts.. that would explain how the market views your decision… well.. not the the market.. you’re clients as well.

Agency Spy : Old Navy dumping Chandelier Creative
June 30, 2008
Old Navy wants a holding company… it appears that they need the same creative that is pushed out by the same 6 players 98% of the spending dollars are. The claim is that they raised their cost of goods.. and now sales are down 6% .. and this is the fault of the advertising agency… good grief..
Rumor also has it that Old Navy has notified the staff that they are looking to ditch the small shop Chandelier Creative (NY) in favor of a larger agency soon, but have not said where they are headed just yet. ( full story )
Perhaps raising their rates and that we are in a recession has something to do with it… but spending more for lower quality creative via a holding company is not the solution…

Something is wrong
June 29, 2008
This is going to affect everyone, from Advertising Agencies to Consumers to Tech … There are going to be a rash of foreclosures and unpaid mortgages showing up in 90 days. Many of the older homes in the US are heated by $5 dollar a gallon heating oil. The problem is that many of the lock in rates people are receiving now are literally $5 dollars a gallon. Roughly 20% of American households located in the northeast use oil heat.. mostly older homes.
The Department of Energy refuses to report on what the prices are now, claiming it’s ‘not an issue’ until winter sets in and people are starting to freeze.
The Heating Oil and Propane Update is produced during the winter heating season, which extends from October through March of each year. Data for residential and wholesale prices for heating oil and propane are only collected during the heating season. U.S. distillate and propane supply data, which includes stocks, production, and demand are available at This Week in Petroleum. The Heating Oil and Propane Update will commence updating at the beginning of the next heating season in October 2008.
At some point starting in October these people are going to turn on their heat and nothing will come out. They will call the oil company to get their heating oil…. and at that point reality will set in.
We are seeing is $2,000 oil tank fill-ups, on top of their older home mortgage purchased in 2005 of $1,000 a month and last but not least.. getting hammered each day with $4 dollar a gallon gas and sky high food prices.
You are looking at an average household expenditure higher than the average income.
This is not good… not good by a long shot. Sure there are people out there going haywire on their credit cards… but this isn’t aimed for those people.. this is aimed for the people that literally are just trying to keep their house warm.
They are going to have to make a hard decision that month. Do I pay the mortgage or do I get heating oil. See it’s almost worthless to lock in the $5 dollar rates now.. because the difference between $5 dollars and let’s say $5.10 at that time will not really matter that much.. both figures are hopelessly out of reach.
These people will default on their mortgages or stop paying their rent… and at that exact moment you will see a disaster in the northern part of the country..
Mark our words… this is going to be a very cold winter for many people…. and many of these people.. they were customers of your clients.. meaning it’s going to hurt them .. then hurt your account.
This is really going to get ugly… and it’s going to make a 12 dollar lawn mower fill-up look like a walk in the park.

Average TV age now 50 - outside the 18-49 Demographic
June 29, 2008
It appears that it’s over. Well, we mean over the target demographic that is… Most of the time the TV Reps keep telling us that their products target the 18-49 Demographic… well now it doesn’t anymore.. it’s now men and women where their kids are not little kids anymore for the most part.. and also for the most part their buying spree years are behind them. What’s the problem? It’s online.. Google is now the target market in terms of purchasing ads via their adwords program or working to populate valid content on their blogs.. or posting videos on Youtube.. or hitting the Digg button on Digg… you get the picture. Hell of a time for this news to break during the start of a recession.
The broadcast networks have grown older than ever — if they were a person, they wouldn’t even be a part of TV’s target demo anymore.
According to a study released by Magna Global’s Steve Sternberg, the five broadcast nets’ average live median age (in other words, not including delayed DVR viewing) was 50 last season. That’s the oldest ever since Sternberg started analyzing median age more than a decade ago — and the first time the nets’ median age was outside of the vaunted 18-49 demo.

Just an interesting story… They sell their Agency to a holding company… few years later.. buy it back 100% … However they were bleeding employees… (funny how the good stuff comes out in the local biz journal)..
McKinney’s work includes ads for Audi, Travelocity and Sony. McKinney has 181 employees, down from 251 at the end of 2006.
The management of Durham-based McKinney, the Triangle’s largest advertising agency, has bought back the company from French conglomerate Havas, the two companies announced Thursday.
The deal, which comes seven years after Havas bought McKinney, gives a management team led by CEO Brad W. Brinegar 100 percent ownership of the firm.

Ad Agencies confused regarding ICANN domain decision
June 26, 2008
Today, June 26, 2008 how advertising agencies market on the internet has changed forever for themselves and their clients… and most of the holding companies don’t even realize what just happened to them. We have been advising our clients to secure their trademarks before today, since the last Domain release they post marked the trademark holding date to prior to the ICANN decision… meaning that if you didn’t have ALL your trademarks secure by now.. you will be regulated to the land rush period.. (if they choose to roll out this like they did the last 3 new domains).
IN short every company now can become a registrar … but that doesn’t mean it has to be open… it can be closed to themselves… meaning that they can own .car … and GM will have the monopoly on that domain name.
http://electric.car could go to General Motors as well http://hybrid.car and http://eco.car
There no longer needs to be a .com, .net, .org, mobi ..etc…… as the .software is now the first level extension…
A total change of how the internet is fundamentally structured from a marketing standpoint has now been approved. Earlier we stated that this is coming down the pike. Not one Advertising agency has voiced their opinion on this on their public blog.. even though THEY are the ones most affected. We thought they were in the stone age… that was a compliment.
This fundamentally changes the way everything is branded online.. to extreme measures. From a technical standpoint, now anyone can become a registrar. If John Doe can come up with his 100,000 or more… he can now own .car and sell gm.car to General Motors… and ford.car to Ford Motor Co.
Or to make things more interesting General Motors could purchase .car and now they own the .car first level domain for life… forcing GM to have to pick something else…
Meaning now that McDonalds can own .hamburger …. making Wendy’s looking for second best.. and Burger King scrambling for .frenchfry
You get the point.. this is going to make the wild west look tame… and it’s going to be literally now or never… because the second one of these big companies come in and purchase that brand… they are going to own it forever….
Trademarks are being filed now.. because remember, last time there was a landrush.. the post dated the trademark date to the approval date by ICANN… to hedge the concept of people going out and getting a trademark just to by this domain name.
Enjoy this breaking news.. .this is going to affect you as a normal internet user and every advertising agency on earth…

Get your .sex for 100 grand (and your .agency and .ibm and .microsoft)
June 26, 2008
Currently all domains names are .com, .net and .org to .gov, .edu .aero, country codes and a handful of others. If the change is adopted, the web’s 1.3 billion users would be able from early 2009 to buy an unlimited number of generic addresses based on common words, brands, company names, cities and proper names, according to ICANN.
This is the mother of all branding issues online. The last thing you want is someone other than P&G getting .shampoo or .cars going to Toyota…. you get the point.
Today ICANN is voting to open it up to everything… You got it… .sex, .wpp , .yooter , .ibm and .nyc will become realities.
That means if you want to visit Microsoft’s site.. it’s not http://www.microsoft.com .. it will literally be just http://microsoft will get you there… or should they choose something like http://windowsupdate.microsoft would take you to the windows update page… or http://ubuntu or http://download.ubuntu would be the new URL… we think you get the point.
This isn’t cheap… it will cost upwards of 100 grand to get the the domain name and have a primitive technology base installed to manage it. Meaning that this is out of touch for many startups… small firms.. or individuals…. some are already calling it ‘domains for the rich’
This will also settle the .xxx domain name that was rejected in favor of the .mobi failure.
Enjoy.
