Ogilvy caught up in South African payment dispute
January 31, 2010
“Because of the unprofessional manner in which the Ogilvy summons was delivered to us, it made it impossible for us to know about the court date.
“The judgement against us by Ogilvy as it stands now is receiving the attention of our lawyers,” he added. The article then goes from bad to worse
The 56,000,000 South African Rand = $7.4 million U.S. dollars
So what was this $7.4 million dollar invoice for?
The ad agency created some signs for cars and motorcycles in ANC colours, held a few colourful rallies with champagne, gourmet food and live entertainment, a few ads on TV. Ogilvy also made a website and setup a facebook account to garner support.
All for the low price of $7.4 million dollars.
Because of course that Facebook account took the lions share of it. And the printer for signs invoiced them millions of dollars for stick on signs.
This is bad…

Ad Agency Ogilvy cans 90 from both coasts
December 2, 2009
We just got a tip that wpp group plc ad agency Ogilvy just laid off 90 people from East and West coast. … we cannot verify this yet as from what we understand, pink slips are flying at multiple locations simultaneously. Our understanding is that many of these people were working on the same project hence the “coordinated attack” to stop them from taking to each other.. or one office giving a heads up to another.
Story is developing, but on face value it appears that Ogilvy is getting really good at firing people.

Ad Agency Mother NY ‘buys whole New York Highrise’
December 1, 2009
Advertising agency Mother New York, is taking an entire building—naming rights and all—for its own. The Observer is reporting that the Ad Agency is moving into this building located at 595 11th Avenue New York, New York.
This is in stark contrast to the other ad agencies that are going virtual. Now this is what we were told… and we cannot verify yet… the reason for this move is due to the “expected increase of business from Dell” … woah… We thought Enfatico and Y&R were agency of record… where did that come from …
Regardless the “rumor” from a somewhat reliable source has stated to Tribble Ad Agency that Mother is doing this in expectation of more business from Dell.
Enjoy the madness… because this has the potential to go bad if things don’t go as expected.. taking on more expenses if there is a double dip recession could mean really bad things. Or hell.. they just might need the room.. .clearly Enfatico doesn’t.
We look forward to the Mother NY sign that is going on that thing, we hear it’s going to be huge… facing the Ogilvy side of course…
Makes one wonder… what do they have against WPP Group plc and Sir Martin? Stealing Dell from Enfatico.. setting up shop next to Ogilvy …

Pink Slips flying at ad agency Ogilvy
October 26, 2009
Evidently Happy Monday at advertising agency Ogilvy, pink slips are flying. George Parker has the full leak.
Layoffs will contintue across the industry as this recession hasn’t seen it’s full potential in terms of unemployment. These people will be forced entering the workforce facing horrific unemployment and very low chances of finding a job quickly as some estimates have noted there are now nearly 200 applicants for each position in the advertising agency space.
This is the worst time to find yourself on the unemployment line. But hey no worries.. we’re sure that Sir Martin will still get his bonus for a job well done.
Days like today are what makes us wonder exactly what is going on, like completely rethink what we thought was the norm. Because clearly the norm isn’t working.

Breaking : Ogilvy fires another 40
May 8, 2009
Parker is reporting that another 40 people have been shown the door at Ogilvy and that Dave Apicella has been fired and Chris Wall has been demoted.
Of course the story is developing… but we got an independent confirmation that more firings have taken place in the company.. our source will not verify the named employees above or the number… but just that “we had to let more people go”.
Story is developing.. and from our understanding.. the problems are running deeper than the recession.

Ogilvy loses Ericsson
May 6, 2009
WPP group plc owned Ogilvy Worldwide has lost their pitch to Ericsson. Ericsson has allocated their budget instead to Lowe Worldwide. This is another stunning defeat for Ogilvy, and points for even more layoffs within the Advertising Agency.
Ogilvy has rearranged the deck chairs so many times in the past few months that it’s hard to keep track who is doing what within the firm anymore.
The review, which took about 10-12 weeks from start to finish weeded out the early losers such as incumbent, Publicis, and McCann Erickson.
At the end it was Ogilvy vs Lowe, and Ogilvy came out second best.
If this continues, Ogilvy will be sitting in the same boat their sister agency is, Enfatico. Who wants to be part of that sinking ship?

Ogilvy accused of over-billing - lawsuit
April 16, 2009
My friend at Media Bistro, Superspy has dug up the dirt on WPP group plc owned Ogilvy NY… according to the lawsuit (we have seen ourselves and can verify the contents of the PDF file).. that Ogilvy has been accused of over-billing their clients, wrongful termination of the whistle blowers and overall horrific ethics practices within the advertising agency.
In short, it paints the ad agency as a politically filthy institution that is ripe with internal politics and dirty tricks.
Truly dirty stuff… we wish them the best.. or at least what they deserve if proven true. Over-billing clients is a moral crime, if not a legal one.

Ogilvy : boxes are being mailed
January 6, 2009
To add insult to injury, the hundreds of staffers at Ogilvy that just got fired are not even allowed to take pictures of their kids home or any of their personal property.. according to poster “roving red” on Tribble ad agency, they are “to be mailed” to their home.
This is “boxgate” in terms of scandal. How bad do you have to be to keep their personal property Ogilvy?
Of course Ogilvy you are not a crook
EDIT: you got to read panicbutton’s comment… he thinks i’m an idiot for saying that boxing the photos of the staffers kids and mailing it (hopefully not lost in the mail) is wrong.

Ogilvy mass firings today
January 6, 2009
George Parker got an inside scoop that WPP Group plc ‘s Ogilvy will be firing individuals in mass today. He noted that the mailroom guys were busy all night readying empty boxes so the fired can pick up their marbles and go.
These people now freshly entering the workforce will be facing the most dire circumstances, they now have no job, and no one is hiring in the industry.
The problem is these individuals have rent, mortgage payments, kids, credit cards and cell phone bills that now will go unpaid, furthering the economic disaster.
Perhaps Milton Friedman was right, we do need a helicopter drop. Milton Friedman argued that deflation can be fought against by “dropping money out of a helicopter”
Well we have deflation, we have mass layoffs… but we don’t see money dropping out of Helicopters for the average individual. Though the banks are seeing large numbers of the CH-47 Chinook overhead.
Which way to AIG, we got newly printed dollars ready for the drop!

Ogilvy internal memo brings scorn from staffers
December 22, 2008
Evidently there is an internal memo circulating around Ogilvy that invokes David Ogilvy’s name… and is upsetting staffers beyond belief……to the point where Tomato’s are being considered as a way to greet management when they parade around the halls with pink slips.
The memo acknowledges that it’s been a “grueling” year, and that it’s “both principles and traditions” that hold the agency together, which is why they’re going forward with the traditional Bagpiper’s March through the hallways. It invokes David Ogilvy’s name, of course. All partners and senior partners are invited to participate, but given the likelihood of tomato-throwing, I have to wonder what kind of turnout they’ll get.
The best line: “We have seen people weep at their desks, touched by the emotion of it.”
The jokes just write themselves…
What a joke, what a farce… these people are getting fired right and left… and moral is the last thing on their minds.. their mortgage payment is.
Go ahead Management, walk the halls… The staffers are getting ready.
