Open Letter to Syfy / Scifi Channel

January 2, 2010

I figured putting this in an open letter format would perhaps assist in your decisions for 2010 and beyond.

1 – We as Scifi fans like the name Scifi, not Syfy. We never thought this was catchy, cool or anything of the sort. In fact check your server logs when you have a chance, and see what most people type in.

2 – On the Scifi Channel, we expect to see Science Fiction, many of us are appalled when we see this:

I wonder how well he did in computer science?

This is and never will be science fiction as the above image isn’t the same as the below one. You can’t expect the Iron Sheik and a Firefly class star-ship to appeal to the same person in mass numbers.

They seriously need bigger guns on that ship.

3 – Many Science Fiction fans believe in science fiction, best explained by Isaac Asimov.

Individual science fiction stories may seem as trivial as ever to the blinder critics and philosophers of today — but the core of science fiction, its essence, the concept around which it revolves, has become crucial to our salvation if we are to be saved at all.

And also from the deep belief that geeks have been running the show for thousands, if not millions of years… and most likely will continue to run the show for just as long. If we survive as a species.

See what happens when someone uses their head.. or another persons bones?

4 – Most science fiction fans do not view this as science fiction.

Boo! Oh noes!

Not to say that we hate it, it’s just not the same as this:

I am sorry Dave, I can’t do that.

5 – So Scifi Channel, when you are choosing your lineup for the next season. We want alittle more of this.

I can’t believe she is an alien.

and less of this:

Honestly we do feel that Lloyd works there.

I wonder if those two wrestlers in the picture spell it Syence Fyction…ya know, to appeal to the American masses…

  3. And I read science fiction too on January 3rd, 2010 1:49 pm

YES! Are you listening, suits? If you showed good Science Fiction and skipped most of the straight-to-DVD cr*p, you wouldn't have to add this other garbage. Let's try showing wrestling on one of the food channels and see how well it goes over.

Point well taken. How about the ads this syfy channel is lowering themselves to? Ashley Madison? Here we are watching a perfectly nice 15 year old Outer Limits and on comes the big ugly guy leaving his wife upstairs to go call Ashley Madison and find some equally homely loser in a marriage they're too chicken dung to get out of so they can have an affair? Do we really need to see that as a money maker for a great channel? I thought they were trying to gain viewers, not lose them.

Got something to say?
