Barack Obama signs GMMB and SS&K as Agency of Record

Barack Obama hires GMMB and SS&K

Senator Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. GMMB will handle media buying and strategic efforts while SS&K will handle non-traditional media chores. This wouldn’t be our first choice, as we of course focus more on the InterActive area, and we personally feel that neither firm possesses the skillset that would be required in some of those areas.

Newspaper Readership hits new lows

Newspaper readership hits new lows

NEW YORK (AP) — Weekday circulation at U.S. daily newspapers fell 2.1 percent in the latest six-month reporting period, according to figures released Monday, in the latest sign that people are turning to the Internet and other media for news

Comparable figures for Sunday newspapers fell 3.1 percent, according to the Newspaper Association of America, an industry group. The calculations are based on reports that newspapers deliver to the Audit Bureau of Circulations.
So the open question is, why are Ad Agencies still allocating resources to Print Media, especially Newspaper ads, as compared to Internet Marketing such as Search Engine Optimization, Social Media Optimization and Search Engine Marketing?

A full page Ad in a decent sized market paper could cost anywhere from 25,000 to 100,000 for a 1 day showing (decent sized meaning what would be considered a major market), where as that would pay for an entire year of hiring an SEO expert on retainer.

The problem we have with this is that the Newspaper ad generally delivers an ROI that would be a fraction of what the Internet Marketing strategy would be.

The typical Ad Agency and Marketing Agency is still looking in the wrong direction for their client.

Linux desktop market share exceeds Vista

April 26, 2007

Random Sample of 125,000 Unique Visitors yields a Linux Desktop Market share that outpaced both Windows Visa and Mac OS combined. The sample of 125,000 Unique visitors yields some unexpected results. If Linux is really nearly 5% market share as this minor study suggests, then Microsoft and Apple both need new Advertising Agencies.

Joost signs major advertisers for TV-over-Web plan

April 26, 2007

Joost, the Internet TV company founded by Europe’s top Web entrepreneurs, has taken a big step towards commercial viability by signing up 31 advertisers worldwide ahead of the launch of its free service. It looks like the entire planet is trying Joost in order to stop funding Google. Advertising Agencies and Marketing Firms are in the process of allocating client dollars to this new venue.

The problem with this new venue is that just because big business likes it.. doesn’t mean the population will..

Talk about Success – Ad Agencies should understand the power of Internet Marketing

April 25, 2007

Reading this recent blog post regarding success at Yooter InterActive Marketing’s Social Media Optimization department it shows what we would consider the current pinnacle of Internet Marketing, Social Media Optimization and Search Engine Optimization.

Massive amounts of traffic like what was described in that release, coupled with the number of bloggers that read the story and discussed it via their blogs leads to dramatic increases not only in direct traffic, but backlinks towards the websites.

In short their clients have achieved an extreme ROI in terms of Awareness and overall Search Engine rankings when Google, Yahoo and MSN spider those blogs and start counting the backlinks towards their clients.

This is marketing 2.0 people. This comes on the heels of a dramatic downturn in print media.  I would suggest that the typical Advertising Agency, and Marketing Agency get on this bus asap.

Don’t upgrade to Ubuntu 7.04 yet – major demand downs servers

April 19, 2007

Major reports of massive download failures currently, the demand for Ubuntu 7.04 has literally crashed the ‘upgrade’ button for those upgrading from earlier versions of Ubuntu.

We don’t know if this a blessing or a curse. The good part about it is that the demand is huge, the bad thing about it is that most people are facing either server not found for upgrades, or are seeing download speeds akin to a 14.4 modem.

If people could hold out, please upgrade during non-peak hours.

Wikipedia lists Web 2.0 as a meaningless buzzword that should be avoided at all costs… generally we tend to agree.

Fighting over control – disruptive technologies

April 18, 2007

Resistance generally happens when faced with disruptive technologies.

In short a major hospital in our local market had their site designed by an Ad Agency and 6 months later when pay per click charges hit the roof, the hospital started shopping for a better solution, a Disruptive technology. In this case it was our firm that had the solution, Yooter InterActive Marketing

This is when it hit the fan. The Ad Agency claims that they can do SEO, but the ad agency in question site ranks for nothing, they hawk their SEO skills in pay-per-click but never show up in the organic results. The decision was a no-brainer. This is exactly when we met with resistance.

The Ad Agency reacted like a 2 year old when they had their Binki taken away. We were told that they claimed that ‘SEO’ and ‘Social Media Marketing’ is not real marketing, despite the fact that they had this displayed in their PPC ads.

We pointed to the fact that if the Ad Agency could do SEO, they would of been working on this a year ago when they were contracted to build the site (they would of put in alt tags, search engine friendly urls, google and yahoo sitemaps.. etc etc). Instead they argued that ‘SEO’ wasn’t a factor… again this information is second hand… but yet it does sound plausible from the client.

We will be contracted to improve the client’s rankings, and do some social media optimization. This will perhaps assist the both the client, and the ad agency to stop bilking the clients when claiming to do SEO.
Dear Ad Agency, lose the Binki.

Sqlspace reports that Genuine Windows Vista sold only 244 copies in whole of China

April 17, 2007

Microsoft has only managed to sell 244 copies in the whole of China. This could be a marketing problem, or as one member pointed out all 244 valid licenses sold were solely to make copies and sell it for 1 dollar a pop in some side corner store.
