Mark Jarvis dropped from payroll

December 31, 2008

Agencyspy and George Parker are both reporting that Enfatico is losing their supporters at Dell, mostly due to firing.

We ran an article yesterday regarding the ongoing disaster at WPP group plc and the question still remains. Does Dell Inc. even need a dedicated ad agency during this depression? Will their ad spend even come close to the projected $4.5 billion that was noted prior to the recession when this contract was signed?

In the latest casualty of the great depression, Chief Marketing Officer, Mark Jarvis has been canned, he was a lead supporter of handing over $4.5 billion dollars to Sir Martin for advertising. The model so far has turned out little despite running now for over a year. 396 days, 11 hours, 41 minutes, 1 second to be exact.

We have seen a blog called “digital nomads” that hasn’t been updated in some time and has a less than handful of comments. Enfatico evidently ran an ad in India, and another ad that was considered littering in Texas.

Overall from what we have seen they might of received about 45k worth of advertising for their $4.5 billion. I stress from what we have seen.

Evidently Enfatico and Richard at Dell has placed us to the ban list for new material (read the comments).

Enjoy the last bits of 2008… 2009 is going to be ugly.

Does Dell still needs its own Ad Agency?

December 30, 2008

We wanted to take the time out today to celebrate the 700 days left with the WPP group plc / Dell Advertising Agency agreement. Exactly 395 days, 13 hours, 6 minutes, 39 seconds Dell signed a 3 year, 4.5 billion dollar Advertising agreement with WPP group plc.

The concept was to take the entire Advertising Budget for Dell, and dump it into one newly formed ad agency. At the time it made little sense, and now it makes even less sense. Ad spends overall have taken a dump of epic proportions, and the question is if Dell now needs it’s own ad agency during the second great depression as it appears we are entering into at an ever increasing rate.

The contract between Dell and WPP is set to expire in 700 days, 11 hours, 24 minutes, 9 seconds. Enfatico went out and took out 10 year lease for their expensive Manhattan offices that however will expire in 2,900 days after the current Dell contract is over.

Leaving a shortfall of just under 8 years between the end of the Dell contract, and their lease.

The agency has fallen off the blogging radar over the past several months due the economic crisis, however in light of the downturn it’s undoubted that more pressure has been placed on Dell to increase sales, which in turn allows for a pretty fair bet that the pressure has fallen on Enfatico as well… both in terms of it’s performance or even it’s very existence as Dell’s advertising agency.

If those thousand or so WPP group plc employees are let go, it would be just a footnote in the long list of layoffs that we are currently seeing happen across the planet.

TBWA\Chiat\Day Loses Leapfrog picks up no one

December 30, 2008

Adweek yesterday asked what will happen to LeapFrog’s $8 million dollar account (Major media spending behind the brand totaled $25 million last year and $8 million through the first nine months of ’08, according to Nielsen Monitor-Plus.) since they dumped TBWA\Chiat\Day. We have an answer. The answer is literally nothing as far as the BDA’s are concerned.

Our unverified sources stated that Leapfrog has been looking at going mostly digital with a smaller firm, and perhaps farm out some minor TV advertising for kids shows. From our sources, none of the holding companies have received any RFP’s… again not verified.

The point is that $8 million dollar account isn’t actually $25 or even $8 million for 2009, it’s supposedly something considerably less, much less. If you think Advertising during the great depression of 2009 is the same as Advertising in 2007 you have another thing coming.

From what we understand, Leapfrog is looking to run a low cost, high ROI online campaign for the majority of the now greatly reduced budget. The skillset required for this isn’t possessed by any of the BDA’s… so you’ll be looking at an interactive firm taking the lead.

If our sources are right, this is actually a trend that will be going full force during 2009. A bunch of interactive agencies taking BDA accounts at a reduced cost.

They (the BDAs) should of been buying SEO and SMO firms back in 2006 when we told them to.

George Parker declares war on MediaBistro

December 30, 2008

Advertising Agency industry Veteran George Parker has officially declared war on MediaBistro. The title of the post is called “Is MediaBistro a bigger scam than Draft/FCB!”

The comments that follow are enormously embarrassing. The problem we have here is that personally we feel that MediaBistro is the problem, not the individual bloggers.

For the longest time we have offered to fix the site, SEO it properly, and add proper Social Media aspects to the site, ensure an easy comment system….. at one point we offered to help them virtually for free.

The individual bloggers there were 100% on board, management however was not. They seem to think that they can do it alone, leveraging their other bloggers within their network to do inter-promotion between blogs. Sort of like taking two broken cars, and hoping to cobble together one that works.

It’s not a valid solution, but what do we know…. we’re just a bunch of tech marketing geeks that code for a living…

Trying to turn a dime on that network of sites with advertising during the great depression is going to be difficult to say the least…

Chanel laying off hundreds of people

December 29, 2008

Chanel, one of the most high end French fashion names, is to lay off 200 Paris based staff. When global brands like Chanel are firing people right and left whereas at the same time Five and Dime stores are doing the same, it states that clear across the board people are feeling the effects of the depression.

We are seeing instances of people that were millionaires 6 months ago now unemployed and can’t meet their mortgage payments.

We can't take care of our own

We can't take care of our own

And it’s hard to believe that all this started by people buying houses and banks lending to those same people that couldn’t afford that house in the first place.

It’s ugly out there, and it will get worse.

Adage shows what’s wrong with Advertising

December 29, 2008

It’s not the article that showed what’s wrong with the Advertising agencies, it’s the graph. On this article is a link to this graph:

All that is wrong with Advertising

All that is wrong with Advertising

The problem we have with this is that even though digital generally generates the highest ROI, it only accounts for 10% of total ad spends. It’s what happens when the agency of record is a BDA with limited digital / SEO and SMO skillset.

Even though this could potentially save accounts, the BDA’s have invested limited resources in flash heavy digital, and hardly anything with SMO and SEO.

So when broken down even further, you’ll notice that the vast majority of digital is in fact flash that the search engines have trouble spidering and reading the content inside. Meaning even with their digital approach they are going backwards to charge the clients more, and generate less ROI for them.

Fairly amazing stuff, considering the state of the economy you would think that the BDA’s would be focusing more on ROI… but they are still focusing more on bilking the client.

Businessweek puts “Cuil” on best startup list

December 29, 2008

We don’t even know where to start with this one. Businessweek has listed “Cuil” the search engine that had 15 minutes of fame earlier this year as one of the best startups.

Evidently the search engine continues to obtain VC funds even though it’s market share has been dropping since the hype.

The UK Register called Cuil a failure and many of us were greeted with 404 error messages and garbage results. Statcounter has published the massive drop in market share after the hype.

But hey.. it’s one of the best startups in 2008. The economy must really be bad… or Businessweek needs a new line of reporters.

We are just pointing this out because we love the spin….

US Marines setup checkpoints for DUI in CA

December 28, 2008

Trust me on this one, you don’t want a DUI in California when the US Marines are the ones guarding the checkpoints on the road. We received this anonymous tip with attached memo showing us the release. Some conspiracy advocates are stating that it’s only the start, others are saying “It’s for DUI’s for heaven’s sake” … That being stated, It’s a pretty radical departure for the traditional military role of guarding the US from external threats, not from American Drunk Drivers.

I myself find the concept of being pulled over by a guy carrying an M-16 and camouflage less than encouraging. 10 years ago, I would of never imagined US military checkpoints within the US. However we live in interesting times.

As you must of realized, there is no advertising agency news tonight.
