It’s time for Hulu to adopt HTML5 instead of Flash

May 2, 2010

Seriously when I can’t even watch TV shows anymore online because I am using the “wrong” OS is when I draw the line. HTML5 … please like yesterday. Of course Adobe would have fixed it if it didn’t stream on “cancel or allow” Vista or Windows 7 or even OSX .. but no since it’s linux we get the shaft.

” We’re sorry but we’re unable to stream videos to your system. This may be due an Adobe software limitation on 64-bit Linux Systems ”

Thank you Adobe, of course considering the fact that Adobe.com is hosted on 64 bit linux.

Nice, so you have no problem using Linux, you just refuse to code for it properly.

Seriously thank you Adobe…. Hulu needs to adopt HTML5 and be done with this mess.

and what codec would you like them to use? ogg theora?
how do you suggest they handle their current content protection mechanism on your codec of choice?

I get that message if I try to use Hulu in Chrome, but it works fine under FF.

And Hulu should support MPEG LA's h.264 standard over Ogg Theora? Apple, Microsoft and a whole lot of companies have patents related to multimedia and are pooled into the MPEG LA's patent portfolio. Using HTML5 with H.264 would mean paying a dime to Apple, Microsoft etc in royalty payments everytime I watch a video- no way I'm gonna do that. Atleast Flash is free…

Now, only if (and when) Google open sources the On2 VP8 codec, it will be a game changer.

The problem, as I understand it, is that 64-bit Adobe Flash for Linux does not support SWF 10, only SWF 9 and below. I don't understand why Adobe is taking so long to fix the problem, because it is a major irritant. At a time when Steve Jobs is criticising Adobe Flash, I would have thought Adobe would gain some brownie points / good PR by getting the 64-bit Flash plug-in working for Linux.

http://blogs.adobe.com/penguin.swf/ still indicates that the 3rd beta release of Flash Player 10.1 for Linux is for 32-bit only:

“Latest Development Version: Flash Player 10.1 beta 3 (10.1.51.95) (.tar.gz and .rpm available); x86_32 only; released 2010-02-24″

mtz - The whole reason there is this push to use HTML5 and get away from Flash is because of the proprietary format which clearly (as the screen shot above proves) is too big for just one firm or basket of firms to handle. ogg theora is the proper choice. Otherwise you jump from the frying pan right into the fire.

you should mention ogg theora if you want it instead of flash.

The current push against flash is coming from apple because flash is primarily a runtime environment they can not control and apple is advocating h.264 and hence they are advocating a change from one proprietary technology to another.

Flash has its issues and most people will like it gone, but mentioning its issues without mentioning alternatives plays into apple's hand. h.284 is not “open” and it is just as bad as flash
