It’s time to GPL Duke Nukem Forever

March 11, 2010

The more I think about it, the more I think the unfinished game needs to be just released under the GPL. The product is only 13 years in the making. It’s creator is mired in lawsuits and bankruptcy.

Let’s face it, the name is ruined from becoming a profit center. Just GPL it and let us opensource guys and girls finish the product. We won’t take 13 years to get a product up and running, in fact, we won’t take 13 weeks to get the product finished if we had the source code.

We’ll also get it on every Linux, Mac, Windows, Android and Iphone out there as well. Hell, we might even get it to run on an X-box, a Playstation and a Wii if given the source code…. some might get it to run on digital watch.

The alternative is of course to never see what was done with it, and how far it got.

We know it’s an incomplete product, we know you switched engines 20,000 times… we really don’t care.. send us all of it.

We’ll get it to work. The alternative is to have it sit in development / bankruptcy / legal fight for the next 13 years. Because as it stands now, this is all we have played.

I do man... I really do... I think everyone from Artists to programmers would jump in on it.. just to prove a point that it could be done and done right and it won't take 13 years.

Are you watching the story? Reading the forums on the www.3drealms.com site? They are all working for other studios. The only thing that we can do as fans is wait. And hope that something happens with the game. But GPL? Really? Not sure what you have been taking but not work for this. Although I agree it works and works well. Just not in this case.

You think GPL would finish the maps, and the art? Your whole story makes it like you have never had anything to do with a game in the making. "Let the people finish it!!" then it would not be DNF so why not just play something else that is out there and be happy.
