Steve Rubel you’re wrong about the Facebook Phone

January 21, 2010

I am sorry Steve, but Facebook isn’t going to launch a phone. The main problem, and this is a big one. Facebook doesn’t have the proper resources to launch a phone. Not even close.

See Google can do it because they have Google Voice, Google Maps (with GPS), Google search, Google Docs, Google’s Youtube and all these contribute to a successful phone. Facebook has fan pages and endless Farmville updates. I hate to break it to you, but Facebook is only marginally better than Myspace… and within a few years the chances are very high it will go the same way.

You’re basis for this is wrong, you’re assuming that it’s brand name is enough to launch. If that is the case then I want my twitter phone! instead of it being able to talk into, it only tweets. Yes it’s mobile, but it’s not enough to make it worthwhile to go into the phone business.

Google went into the phone business because it has the resources to go into the phone business. It had a platform that is highly relevant to make a phone profitable for them. They have the infrastructure to use GPS for example with their maps program. Whereas a Facebook phone would have to use Google Maps.

The Facebook phone would also stream Google Youtube videos, and use Google voice.

I’m sorry Steve, what you are stating is Facebook will launch a Facebook branded page using Google tools one day.

As a long time advertising agency executive, I am sure there is some professional rivalry between the agencies and Google (Google being the largest advertising agency on earth)… I completely understand your hopes on seeing Google be taken down a notch, but this isn’t going to happen in this fashion.

Someone one day will be able to take Google on, but it’s not going to be facebook via a phone. Plus who’s going to want a “Fphone” … sort of has some bad karma with it. As my “Fphone doesn’t work” …
