Top ad campaign of century - VW Beetle - we disagree
There’s Nike’s “Just do it,” the Marlboro Man, the U.S. Army’s “Be all that you can be,” Apple Computer’s “1984,” Campbell Soup’s “Mmm mmm good!,” the Jolly Green Giant. The list goes on and on.
However, one campaign did much more than boost sales and build a lifetime of brand loyalty. It’s the 1960s ad campaign for the Volkswagen Beetle. The ad, and the work of the ad agency behind it, changed the very nature of advertising-from the way it’s created to what you see as a consumer today.
However we disagree, we think it’s the Sock Puppet from Pets.Com … why the sock puppet? Because it’s been blamed for the total collapse of the company.
It was a prime example of spending out of control, and advertising that consumed the entire company budget. Some say that their Ad Agency killed the company.
In this example, we feel that it highlights the failure of their marketing efforts.
Cute commercial, too bad it killed their company.
