Bentley forces idle employees to build furniture

March 4, 2009

Bentley, the expensive car manufacturer, has started making furniture in an attempt to fend off layoffs in its skilled woodworking team. You heard that right, the $200,000 car builder has turned it’s team to chairs and desks. the telegraph is reporting.

Begging for a sale… of the furniture:

“We have been turning our hand to making furniture. At the moment they are making furniture for us, but no doubt somebody will want to buy it from us.

Bentley is perhaps the definition of high end automobile. No bailout funded Banker worth his salt will drive anything less… and that’s the root of the problem.

Calling this anything less than the mother of all recessions, or a depression is being less than honest. It’s ugly out there people.. really ugly.

I think it’s a great idea and something worth exploring by other companies (not the US car manufacturers, of course).
At least Bentley is trying to do something very noble and that is, trying not to layoff people in this depression.

give them a bit of credit for not just laying everyone off… now if only they could do something smart about those ugly-ass expensive cars….
