Where do I file for unemployment benefits ?

February 16, 2009

Due to the extreme levels of unemployment in the United States, we have taken the time to outline on a state by state basis where you can file for unemployment benefits. We spent some considerable time going though Google looking at each state’s unemployment site. As far as we know there is no “complete” unemployment benefits list like this.. at least one that is easily found. Generally we focus on Advertising Agencies, but in light of the current environment it’s painfully clear that this recession / depression isn’t affecting only one industry.

Most individuals don’t know where to start, and some thought that the unemployment benefits were run from the federal level, not on a state by state basis, so a search for unemployment benefits yielded results from far off states that more than anything confused individuals.

Each state has it’s own policies on how you can file, however all of them allow for online filing. Please select the state you reside in, and move forward from there. If your employer is located in another state you will need to research the guidelines on how to handle that aspect. In MOST cases filing in the state you reside in will do the job.

We STRONGLY suggest not to use any non-state owned sites for unemployment, as the states are what run the programs and the chances are the 3ed party will just take a cut from what is owed to you.

Please forward this list around so everyone knows where they can go.

In addition to online filings, various states allow initial applications for unemployment benefits to be filed by mail, fax, touch tone telephones and/or TTY devices (for the hearing impaired).
