Why the Super Bowl Ads Suck?

February 1, 2009

Reading ad agency vet, Parker’s Blog he raised a valid point. The reason the ads suck overall is because the demoralized staff facing the the industry.

No one F*$$@!ng cares anymore. Because we are all just hanging on for survival!

That is the truth, you have a demoralized workforce. You have creatives worried about their jobs going down the toilet. They are at work thinking if they can make the mortgage, put food on the table for their kids. How can someone work properly under those conditions?

I dare someone to HONESTLY say below that they can put in a full day, without thinking that their job is at risk while pink slips are flying in the office. If you think you are in a such a powerful position in your ad agency that you are safe, then take a look at your clients… are they having layoffs? If they are firing employees then the chances are they will be cutting their advertising budget as well. Meaning you can go from king of the hill to man looking for a job in a matter of weeks.

Don’t think it can’t happen… it can… and it does often. The point is that this is weighing down on productivity throughout the industry.

The economy is no excuse. Super Bowl ads and Super Bowl halftime entertainment ALWAYS suck. Always and Forever. It’s a law of social-media-stupidity.

They all stunk, it looked like every ad was done by a commitee of people afraid of losing their jobs and approved by a commitee at the customer of people afraid of losing their jobs too, farmed out to a former group of in-house ad guys who lost their jobs and who were doing it on a shoestring out of their house.

You wanted my opinion - thats it - oh, you didn’t want my opinion. Well, you got it anyway. So Abe Lincoln and a guy who looks like Obama walk into a bar, complaining about their jobs - how they never get out and ever time they get out evertone is always following them around. Then they’re sitting on a monument gazing out at the Washington Mall, or, in the case of the Obama look a like he’s lookng out the Balcony of the White House - smiling - the tagline - choose the right career - Godaddy.com .

Even that lame spot would be 1000x better than what was on last night.
