Adweek : Where will all the Advertising “talent” go?

January 19, 2009

We had mixed feelings regarding this article on the BDA’s paid shill news outlet, Adweek. In short the article states that Advertising Agency executives are forced to flee the country due to lack of work.

They state this “As ad jobs dry up some executives may leave the industry or even the country”. Does Adweek mean the people that draft up the pink slips? Or are they talking about staffers that actually do the work? There is a big difference when we are discussing sympathy with their plight. The single mother earning just enough to feed her children and put a roof over their head is much different than the guy that is concerned with where his last year model BMW will be parked due to the 2 car garage in Canada rather than 4 that he is accustomed to in New Jersey.

Inquiring minds want to know exactly who is Adweek talking about when they discuss the country fleeing jet setters that go from one nation to another looking for work.

I have no mixed feelings about this article: it’s just another load of crap from an increasingly irrelevant industry shill.

The article lede suggests that lots of laid off ad people may be emigrating to other countries. But their one example is of a London-based exec being recruited by a US firm.

In any event, is this really news? Is anyone really surprised to find out that the people that have been laid off might have to look outside the advertising industry to find work? Or that they might open their own shops?

Got something to say?
