Google hands out Android phones - no cash bonus
December 23, 2008
The Financial Times is reporting that Google, the world’s largest Advertising Agency, is taking a unique cash cutting option, it’s not handing out bonuses. Instead it’s handing out Android Phones. Granted it’s a cool item… but not exactly the same as the average $1000 dollar bonus each employee got.
We figure it would be about $200 bucks per employee rather than the $1000…. considering they have 21,000 employees that saves them a net $800 per employee.
About 80% of Google Employees are receiving these phones meaning a total of 19,320 employees or about $3,864,000 vs $19,320,000 if they handed out the traditional $1000 dollar bonus… meaning a net savings of about $15,456,000
And that’s based on $200 per phone.. we doubt they are paying that… but we’re trying to be conservative…
However the point we are trying to make is that 19 million is chump change for a company that has a market cap of almost $100 billion.
Moves like this… taking money out of your employees (when your company is as wealthy as Google) is not exactly the coolest thing to do… considering with a $1000 dollar bonus they could of just as easily purchased a phone themselves.
Another thing worth considering is that honestly we are in a credit crunch… but this is affecting their employees more than Google… as Google is virtually debt free and has billions in the bank.
That 1000 dollars for them could of done much more for each employee family than the 15 million for Google… (that wouldn’t even pay their electric bill).
Google earned their money, they can spend it as they wish… however this just an opinion on how it could of helped more people…

Got something to say?

They should have given the Android AND $1,000 BONUS. That would have been really cool and would have sent a message out that Google really takes care of its employees. Well…at least they have a job…
