Average home price $18,513 - Unemployment rate 21%

December 21, 2008

The Great Depression has reached Detroit. The average price of a home is now $18,513 and unemployment has reached 21%, and it’s expected to get worse. Detroit is facing a crisis of epic proportions that officially puts Detroit statistically (and real term) on par with the great depression. Many readers of Tribble Ad Agency are advertising centric.. and due to the rash of layoffs within all Detroit Advertising firms has put the city on the map for the wrong reasons.

It has become the center of all that is wrong with America… and nothing of what is right.

For example, the crime rate has fallen…. because of lack of targets within the city. Meaning there is nothing left to steal. In fact, even the criminals don’t want to leave jail.

Heard confirmed that some offenders, notably those without homes of their own, were now expressing reluctance to leave jail when their sentences were done.

Home values have plummeted to levels not seen in 1/2 a century… and the 21% unemployment has in some cases been projected to double within 12 months if the auto industry totally collapses.

To make matters even worse, Detroit has superseded New Orleans as the “worst city” in America…. but New Orleans had a Hurricane they could assign blame to… Detroit has no such natural disaster crutch.

“It’s a depression — not a recession,” McDuell said, with the authority of someone who has lived through both. “It will get worse before it gets better.”

It’s a man-made disaster.

Regarding a local food bank in Detroit that has seen record numbers of individuals entering the system:

“Many people are first-timers — they have no idea how to navigate the system, how to qualify for food stamps,” Wells said. “Last year, some were donors — now they’re clients.”

In short, last year they donated money into the system… now they are feeding from it because they themselves are in hard financial times.

Detroit needs a miracle, the chances of it showing a resurgence is slim to none in the current economic outlook.

EDIT Saturday December 27th — do to a flood of nearly 400 comments, commenting has been shut down for this thread. It’s not that we don’t like free speech… but speech that focuses on Religion, Color and other non-advertising issues are well beyond the scope of this news outlet for Advertising Agencies.

The reason we covered and researched this story was due to the rash of layoffs in Detroit within the Advertising Agency business, as many of these agencies depended on the Auto industry for their income.

We suggest any comments beyond the scope of advertising go to a free speech forum, such as sqlspace.com

Edit 2 : we re-enabled comments… please remember the scope of the site is Advertising.

Where are the sources for this article. This person could have made these numbers up… How can all of you take this article seriously without demanding the sources for the unemployment and home price figures. $18,513 ? Are you kidding me. I’d like to see the sources for that number please. The 21% unemployment is more reasonable but still hard to believe.

The truth is America is huge and there are just way to many cities and towns, much of the population of this generation has moved south were the weather is much better leaving many areas populations to small to sustain that city or town. There are now cities/towns that should just be closed up and destroyed, bull dozed and the people that are left should be forced to move to other areas in the country that are doing better. All these depressed areas are pulling down the rest of America. America has been overbuilt and its time to let nature take some back!

I have lived in Detroit my entire life. I just took an early retirement and buy out from Hertz. But this is actually good news for me. I just bid on the house my daughter sold three years ago for 114 K. It’s in St. Clair Shore. nice city, north of the infamous 8 Mile Rd. If I win the HUD bid Monday I will snatch it up for 20K. I will be living two miles south of my daughter and grand kids. I am sorry for those who are in worse shape, at least I qualify for Social Security disability for medical reasons. My 401K survived the hit, I readjusted the diversity back in July.

If the US auto industry had not been in bed with Big Oil, and screwed the customers, (and dirtied the planet), with thirsty petrol engines, then Detroit would be boomig, and no Toyota or Honda in sight. Detroit Auto didnt have the decency/courage to go pure hydrogen. The patent by Garrett in 1935(!!) fully powered the vehicle with in-car produced hydrogen. Tell me that when color TV can be streamed back from planet Mars, the brilliant US/automotive scientists cannot efficiently split a water molecule. What goes round, comes round, is the Universal law of creation.

Lyndon Larouche says that we have to save the machine tool capacity of the auto companies. We do that by retooling Detroit for brand new things- maglev and electirified rails and modular nuclear power plants. See http://www.larouchepub.com for more.

The official statistics still claim that the median house price in Detroit is $126,389 . That may be way ahead of the real current prices. But what is the true number?

Median and average are two different things. That means there are some REALLY expensive houses somewhere in Detroit and a whole lot of really cheap ones.

To keep this advertising related: I don’t know how you justify spending money to sell to people who have no money, but you really have to in order to keep business alive. Marketing helps power hope and that is what we all need a little of now. Consumer confidence drives the market.

As someone who was born in Detroit and still lives in the area, it’s difficult to figure out where do you start with the problems in Michigan. The auto industry should’ve made changes a long time ago, the UAW needs to make more changes (i.e. - get rid of the jobs bank) but it shouldn’t be dismantled; there’s a SERIOUS race relations problem, particularly in Southeast Michigan. See the following article on the racial divide: http://www.detnews.com/2005/metro/0509/22/A01-323733.htm
There’s another study which took place a few years ago which said Southeast Michigan is now as racially divided as Alabama was in the 1950s and 1960s. Why does that matter? It’s incredibly difficult for a region to resolve economic and political issues when everyone comes to the table with preconceived notions or refuses to come to the table at all. I was in NY a few months ago and it felt good to walk down the street and pass by people from so many different cultures. That doesn’t happen in Detroit. Anyway, regarding the auto industry, keep your eye on Ford. They hit rock bottom a few years ago and are well on their way to thinking and acting smart. Picking up a little Ford stock right now might not be a bad idea either (for 3-5 years down the road).

I agree with NativeDetroiter. Buy Ford stock today and you will be rich later in life. You might even recoup the losses you took in 2008. Also, owning a Ford vehicle in the future will be a status symbol, like owning an American built Harley is today. The morons calling for the demise of the Big Three don’t realize that without Detroit their kids would be learning Japanese or German in kindergarten, would still be riding horses, and listening to crummy music.
