Note to Companies : These are real people you are firing

December 11, 2008

I get frustrated when I read stories like this. These ad agencies are firing people right and left, with little regard to understanding they are NOT just computers or tools. They are human beings. Another issue is the individual was fired in Detroit, a city with little job opportunity. Meaning that if she wants to get a job in her field, the chances are she is going to have to spend thousands heading to another city as virtually every Advertising Agency in the town (scratch that virtually every company) is laying off people with hiring freezes. To put it lightly there is little hope currently for a new position of similar salary.

She might have kids, a mortgage.. this will have a profound effect on the entire family.

This might or might not apply, but there are many cases out there were a parent was fired during this recession and no one will buy their house so they can get out… meaning they are trapped.

Don’t worry, Sir Martin Sorrell and his counterparts are doing just fine with their multi-million dollar homes and limos heading to the airport to fly in a private jet or first class..

This is bad people.. and it’s just going to get worse.

I’ve been looking for 5 months now…and moved back to the East coast from LA. Yep. It is bad.

    I hate feeling like this.
My job seems safe, but that could change any day and even though I know I have contributed tremendously and helped my agency grow, I still feel totally insecure about it. This is bad, really bad.

It’s horrific…. and it will just get worse as things move on… until a company can go into a bank and ask for a 20 million dollar loan in todays dollars to retool their factory.. and get it on good terms… this will continue to get worse.

As a former president of two ad agencies, I’ve had to both fire and layoff people in my career. Firing is uncomfortable, but tolerable because there is a reason that can be explained and justified to the employee. It generally doesn’t come as a surprise either. Laying someone off because of economic times is a different story. I can’t speak for other agency senior managers, but in my opinion, this is the agency’s failure, at least philosophically, and the employee simply gets caught in the fallout. My heart totally went out to them. During my tenure running agencies, this was the most gut wrenching thing I ever had to do.
