MISSISSAUGA, ON, May 20 /CNW/ - Wal-Mart Canada today announced that it
has hired J. Walter Thompson as its advertising agency of record for English
Canada. The announcement follows a recently concluded account review and
competitive process, including many of Canada’s top-name agencies. J. Walter
Thompson replaces Publicis; Allard-Johnson remains the company’s agency of
record for Quebec.
The account will see J. Walter Thompson assume full-range marketing
responsibilities to promote Wal-Mart Canada’s retail leadership and corporate
citizenship.
“JWT will be a valuable partner in helping shape our future public and
consumer image in Canada, building on what has been established over more than
a decade,” said Vi Konkle, chief customer officer, Wal-Mart Canada. “From our
price leadership and environmental sustainability to our commitment to the
customers and communities we serve, we look forward to working with the team
at JWT to leverage the Wal-Mart Canada story.”
“We feel this is the beginning of a very exciting and productive
relationship,” said Tony Pigott, president and CEO, JWT Canada. “Wal-Mart
Canada touches the lives of millions of Canadians every day. It is a testament
to their success and momentum. JWT has an outstanding record of helping brand
leaders build even stronger, more enduring connections with Canadians. We look
forward to bringing to the Wal-Mart Canada team and mission a unique
combination of creative, brand, and social strategy talent together with the
clout and skills of our partners at Excelerator Media. We can’t wait to get
started.”
Wal-Mart Canada began operations in 1994. The company’s advertising
account was initially managed by SMW Advertising and transferred through
agency acquisition to Publicis in 1999. Company advertising has focused on
Wal-Mart’s commitment to customers and the communities it serves.
“Through a variety of creative campaigns, Publicis has helped establish
Wal-Mart as a household name, a retailer of choice and a bold Canadian brand,”
said Konkle. “We thank them kindly.”

Based in Mississauga, Ontario, Wal-Mart Canada operates 299 stores
nationwide, serving more than one million Canadians daily. With more than
75,000 associates, the company is one of Canada’s largest employers.
