OMFG : Why Apple will succeed

May 31, 2011

Ty Fujimura wrote an article on the Huffington Post stating “Why Apple is Doomed”

This is it’s rebuttal, line by line.

While they do make superior hardware, their secret sauce is interface design. Apple consistently develops interfaces so intuitive that instructions would seem silly. Even toddlers can navigate the iPhone effectively. Their products simply make sense, in a way their competitors seem unable to match. Because of this unique advantage, Apple has achieved their greatest success creating mobile devices, where the interface is psychologically closer to the user.

This is 100% agreed, and for the record, it’s 100% the reason Apple will succeed for years to come.

His management, even his vision, is replaceable. But that brilliant sense of taste, to which Apple owes their success, will not be matched by the next regime. His death would leave Apple closer to the pack than ever.

Steve Jobs leaving Apple of course would be a huge loss, however the company has succeeded due to a simple business model that has 4 main parts.

Often, More, Faster, Genial or better said OMFG

* Often release new versions of the product
* More 3ed party apps that Apple can control
* Faster the better
* Genial Interface

This isn’t rocket science. Steve Jobs already laid out the groundwork in terms of what the interface needs to be. Apple doesn’t need to be innovative in terms of programs or apps, an Army of 3ed party developers has that covered. All Apple has to do is just make sure the interface works with the hardware in a dumbed down simple mode. Put it in a white case and release a new version every 15 months and bingo it’s going to sell and fanboys and girls are going to give Apple whatever it wants.

That’s it. Apple is in a good position now. As long as they follow this snippet that you provided in your article:

Longtime Apple engineer Mike Evangelist was once tasked with heading the design of a DVD burning program for the Mac. His team developed dozens of sophisticated mock-ups and gathered to present them to Jobs. “He picks up a marker and goes over to the whiteboard,” remembers Evangelist, “He draws a rectangle. ‘Here’s the new application,’ he says. ‘It’s got one window. You drag your video into the window. Then you click the button that says BURN. That’s it. That’s what were going to make.’”

Apple needs to innovate on the hardware and interface side. Everyone else will do the rest of the innovation for them. When we mean innovate, we mean a VERY limited amount of big virtual buttons and maybe some decent voice recognition in the future.

This honestly has been their strategy under Steve Jobs for decades, and it will continue to be their mission for decades to come. No one buys Apple products for their cutting edge technology, but everyone buys Apple for their simple to use interface.

Also worth mentioning, it’s always a good idea to give away computers to schools… it’s been an Apple strategy since the 1980′s… and every generation a new group of kids know what an Apple is.

Rear Adm. David L. Philman : China is the Enemy

May 26, 2011

Rear Adm. David L. Philman - “But they will catch up. They understand. They’re a smart and learning enemy, and if we don’t keep our edge, then we will be behind, or at least lose our advantage,”

Evidently the United States is now Enemies with China.

The statement was not taken out of context. The Washington Times reported.

The Chinese Military buildup is scaring the Pentagon as the growth of advanced technology coming from China is nothing less than staggering. Recently China has announced the development of a Stealth Fighter, anti-Aircraft Carrier missiles, along with a long list of other exotic weapons that the Red Army can bring to the battlefield.

China, though a massive trading partner with the United States does have areas where both countries could clash over various issues. The flashpoint that consistently comes up is Taiwan, however it does not end there. There are disputes with several nations regarding territory, such as with Japan over several islands.

Other areas of dispute would be support of North Korea.

The end results is that Adm Philman considers China the Enemy… is it a valid point?

Screenshot of Web 2.0 Death

May 25, 2011

When your normal “no special deal” adsense ads start running on your once great Web 2.0 website it’s time to quit. Everyone knows what happened to Digg over the past over the past year… and of course recently over the past few months Digg has been running adsense…. it’s not the custom branded adsense that Google provides to higher end sites. It’s the run of the mill, Google Branding adsense. The kind that you can find at any website.

In other words, the site completely lost it’s lustre.

It’s time to call it quits Digg, seriously it’s time to sell and redirect the domain name to something worth while.

The obituary for Digg would read as following:

Here stood a website that got in bed with Microsoft and caught an STD. There was no cure, because sponsored feeds, banning sites that were critical of the software company, were not above the table.

However the issue isn’t just focused on Digg. The issue overall is the entire “web 2.0″ concept.

Some of these companies are profitable and real, such as Facebook. Others however are… well…. still struggling with a business model.

The major criticism is that there is no such thing as Web 2.0 … calling these companies nothing more than just 1990′s startups using 2010′s technology. A common statement is “tell me the difference between Facebook Chat and ICQ” or “Online Social Networking was invented in 1995, I had a geocities page as well” and perhaps the most comical “Explain to me the difference between watching a Real Video Stream and watching a Youtube Stream”

Many of the arguments are valid.

What are your thoughts?

Mets Fan Starts Open Letter To Ownership

May 23, 2011

in light of new york mets owner fred wilpon’s controversial comments in a new yorker article posted this morning, we found one mets fan who is mad as hell and has started an open letter to the ownership group online.

the site: sell the team now! appears to have been registered this morning. even more interestingly, it has adopted a format in which other mets fans around the world can register and add their thoughts to the mix.

it seems this might make a bad situation for the wilpon family much, much worse. they are already embroiled in a lawsuit due to their alleged participation in the madoff ponzi scheme, and the mets are in fourth place in the national league east, two games under .500. this site seems as if it will enable all mets fans to voice their opinions, good or bad, on the wilpon family and their ownership of the club.

in the article, mr. wilpon had some derisive comments for three of the franchise’s best and most popular players: jose reyes, david wright and carlos beltran. he also referred to the current team as a “shitty” team.

wilpon bought into the franchise in the mid 1980s. he was partner for a number of years with nelson doubleday jr - he bought doubleday’s shares of the team in the early 2000s to become the sole (primary) owner. his son jeff wilpon is the team’s COO, and his brother-in-law saul katz is also on the board of directors.

it personally seems odd to me for the owner of a team to call out his own players like he did this morning. if you’d like to read more, you can read the entire article here.

Ask a vet about tips for abscesses in cats

Ask a vet about tips for abscesses in cats

I have seen and treated countless abscesses in my career. Most did require at least a minor surgery or heavy sedation to do a thorough flushing of the abscess with antiseptic. I can recall three pets, all Golden Retrievers, where the abscess healed on it’s own. The dogs were all very tolerant and I was able to teach his parents how to really clean it at home.

While I do think that surgery is very often needed for cat abscesses if they have truly become walled off abscesses and not just really infected wounds, there are a couple things you can do to increase the chances that it will heal.

Home supplies: curved tip- syringes (you can buy them direct from your vet or have your vet write a prescription to a pharmacy- a call ahead by you to make sure they have them is a wise time-saver), a strong antiseptic to squirt into the lesion regularly (chlorhexidine is my favorite; a nice-sized bottle of it costs $4 from Walmart or Target, or you can get a giant bottle for $10 to ensure you won’t run out, again this is a prescription your vet has to write for you, which they should have no problem doing), a good ointment to infuse the abscess with regularly, usually around 2x/day (my favorite is silver sulfadiazine, and you can guess where you get it and how much it costs-yes, again the human pharmacy and it’s $4).

The treatment protocol I recommended for my clients and patients included twice daily flushing using the curved tip syringes into the abscess, taking care not to be rough or painful with the tip of the syringe. The temperature may be a little shocking to the cat. I would draw up the chlorhexidine in the syringes and hold them in your hands to warm them for several minutes first. Cats usually don’t appreciate cold water being squirted in or on them. I always recommended to continue this “flushing” step until you were no longer getting abscess debris out. FYI, it is not uncommon to get small strings of blood that had clotted inside the abscess content, but if bleeding is severe, you probably need help from your vet.

After a thorough flushing, I taught my clients how to infuse the abscess with the silver sulfadiazine. Once the wound was full, I instructed them to leave it open. This can be quite messy, as they tend to seep a little ointment and abscess debris throughout the day. You may want to consider confining him away from certain areas if this is a concern. In the evening, both the flushing and the infusing were repeated. Warm water is good, but you can do much better for him.

Of course, strong antibiotics and probably a mild pain med are in store.

Antibiotics:

Cats are often very difficult to give oral antibiotics and often they also vomit and get an upset stomach. They also can hold grudges and magically “disappear” when it is time to get their medication, especially if you are “torturing” him with the abscess treatment. In my opinion, if the infection is susceptible to it, the best antibiotic in cats with this problem is Convenia (Cefovecin sodium). This is a newer antimicrobial drug that is great because it lasts about 14 days and it is a single injection once. Your vet has to give it to him. I can’t sing it’s praises enough. This is a bit more than the $4 drugs, but is still affordable at around $30. Your vet may still prescribe another antibiotic for broader antimicrobial coverage. If oral pills work, great. If not, your vet can write a prescription to a compounding pharmacy to have an antibiotic made up that you can just rub inside his ears. This is called a transdermal antibiotic. It should also be relatively inexpensive but depends on the pharmacy.

Pain:

Cat abscesses are painful. Be sure to inquire about pain medication if your vet does not discuss this. With cat abscesses, depending on the amount of pain, I recommend either Butorphanol orally or Buprenorphine transmucosally. Both of these agents have the added affect of relaxing them and preventing them from self-mutilation.

Self-mutilation:

Do be sure to use an ecollar (the lamp shade) to prevent self-mutilation. Some of the greatest side effects I have seen from any post-surgery is self mutilation from lack of use of the e-collar. If you decide to have the surgery done, keep it on at all times. If they can’t eat or drink with it on, assist them and monitor them when you take it off briefly. It is bad when they pull out their drains because not only is that painful, but they have to undergo anesthesia again to repair the damage and replace the drains, which means more money and more time with the e-collar. Another bonus with the e-collar is many cats will be angry about this, and it displaces or seems to displace some of their anger and pain about their injury.

Now, the trouble with cats is most won’t tolerate this type of treatment. I have unfortunately had (all I believe) my cat owners that wanted to try home treatment at first come back after weeks of trying and many new scratches and scars to have the surgery. Tolerant cats may have a shot, and if you have a second person to help you, this will likely also help. If you have a question about your pet’s health, you can ask a vet 24/7.

Was IMF Head Dominique Strauss Kahn arrested over SDR Bonds?

May 16, 2011

Clearly Dominique Strauss-Kahn is becoming a hot topic as it is shaping up to be the conspiracy theory of the century. Even now on Ebay you’ll find his name listed.

STRAUSSKAHN.NET, STRAUSSKAHN.ORG are all for sale as a package for 950 bucks (current bid, most likely it will go higher.. much higher due to the traffic they are currently getting.

Regardless it appears that people are profiting and it’s spurring a mini-industry on who can type faster. The supporters or detractors of his arrest.

This can honestly be the conspiracy theory of the century. The IMF under Dominique Strauss Kahn has been over the past 3 years been planning it’s own currency of reserve. Calling on a currency called an SDR (special drawing rights) in focus the point that could be the major issue is the SDR bond that allows the IMF to issue bonds that could (and most likely would) compete with US treasuries.

The moment the SDR BOND becomes popular is the exact moment the US dollar loses it’s currency reserve status.

But alas, the guy that was pushing this through finds himself behind bars on what some say are bogus charges.

You could imagine what is at stake. The US dollar itself.

If Dominique Strauss Kahn was able to pull this off and use the IMF to draw SDR Bonds you will see a dramatic drop in the value of the US debt. Countries and investors would be buying SDR bonds rather than US treasuries. It will effectively end the USA’s ability to print off the debt.

Instead however we find the leader of the IMF behind bars. Was he setup? Was this engineered to keep the US Dollar as the currency of reserve?

Apple calls bug a feature

May 16, 2011

The Apple iPhone 4 has a glaring bug, even worse than the famed alarm bug. Under some conditions individuals cannot edit calendar events. (see attached screen shot of missing edit button).

The annoying problem leads to notifications for meetings that do not exist on a recurring basis, basically reminding the Apple Customer that there is a bug on their phone every 2 weeks or whatever the schedule is setup as for the recurring calender event.

Individuals are being told by Apple Support that the lack of ability to edit calendar events is due to a new “feature”.

Huh? Not being able to remove a meeting if the meeting is cancelled is a feature?

This is complete garbage apple, fix your product.

It is not a feature to have an event for a meeting that does not exist, and to have it recurring every single week, other week, day etc is annoying at best or confusion and having people show up for no reason at worse.

Fix this Apple… give us our edit button back for all calender events, not just “some of them”

NASA : Earth Impact Threat : 2011 AG5 Hits 1 on the Torino Scale

May 13, 2011

In 2040 (about 29 years) on February 2 at 5:16 AM there is a 1 in 3,570 chance that AG5 will hit Earth. The 140 meter sized asteroid could unleash a similar (most likely much greater) level of destruction than the Tunguska Event in 1908 NASA is reporting

The Tunguska Event was an explosion over Russia roughly 1,000 times more powerful than the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan. This one can cause severe damage that will alter global weather conditions for years. The localized devastation would be off the charts.

It’s not a extinction level event, but people most likely wouldn’t want to be within 500-1000 miles of the impact.

The problem is very seldom do these asteroids make it past zero on the Torino Scale. Currently the only one listed is AG5 on the scale. The other asteroid that is of concern is AR85

The chances are much lower than AG5 , but the near earth object is nearly 20 times the size, and would be an extinction event impact if it does hit.

Enjoy the new reality.

Women only social media site reaches 100,000 users

May 12, 2011

For a website that has a very specific market, women that have been wronged by men. The social media site ihatemen.org has reached 100,000 users within weeks after it’s official launch.

The website is fairly simple. It allows women to friend and follow other women (there are a handful of men on the site as well, but they are the minority) but the cinch is that are given the chance to publish their story on the main page of the site. What happens is fascinating…. generally within hours dozens if not hundreds of comments show up with women giving advice to other women regarding how to handle the situation.

Most of the posts are moderated to filter our true names, phone numbers and addresses. So the site isn’t targeted to someone listing an exact individual.

Regardless it appears that the site has generated some interest by dating sites.. as offers have already been made to the owners. It’s setup so that users can comment using their facebook login or their twitter login, in order to post comments however they must setup their own account on the social media site in order to publish an article on the main page.

Fairly interesting to see this one unfold. We were told that within days people will be able to post via text message. That means the second someone is upset on a date, they could post what’s wrong and within minutes get responses.

AR85 - Earth Impact Risk Summary

May 4, 2011

The massive object called AR85 2010 or better known as just AR85 is over 1.1 km in size and was observed only over a course of 1.7 days (about 40 hours total) Meaning that we have very little information regarding this massive near earth object.

We do know from observations that the Asteroid AR85 has roughly double the chance of hitting earth than you winning Powerball.

That being stated someone hits Powerball nearly every week

However another way to say it is that it’s roughly the chance of 1 out of 300 million to hit us. That figure changes as there appears to be 36 Potential Impacts starting in early 2015, when factored all together the chances do go up, but not dramatically as it’s still in the 1 in a millions level.

NASA has more information regarding it.

Should the object strike earth it would be the largest explosion humanity has ever seen. Massive earthquakes up to Richter Magnitude 13, and numerous large magnitude aftershocks would result from the impact of a large object with the Earth. If the object hits water, a tsunami from such an impact is estimated to produce waves from 1 to 3 km high.

We’re not trying to scare anyone, we’re just stating that this is one of the most massive objects currently on NASA’s threat level website, and this one hasn’t received any media attention. Yes the odds are low, but so is winning the lottery.
