Really Bad Advertising from mcgarrybowen

August 20, 2009

We’re in a horrible recession right? Like spending for “Affluent Customers” isn’t exactly a good idea now. Throwing your money around when people are losing their homes right and left is not even close to being cool correct? So someone tell me the problem with this press release from Advertising Agency mcgarrybowen and Chase?

“Chase SapphireSM Combines Rewards, Benefits, and Premium Service to meet the Modern-Day Needs of Affluent Customers”

The Money being wasted:

Chase Sapphire is being promoted through an integrated marketing campaign across multiple channels including: television, print, newspaper, online, events, public relations, and direct marketing. The campaign will debut on Aug. 20th with television ads on the major network morning shows. Created by New York-based advertising agency mcgarrybowen, “Dress” is an ad featuring a couple with individual preferences on how to use the points earned on their combined Chase Sapphire card, set to Frank Sinatra’s “The Way You Look Tonight” The TV ads will air on major network and cable stations, including NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, The Travel Channel, ESPN, CNBC, CNN and TBS. Print ads will be featured in major magazines targeting the affluent market, including Condé Nast Traveler, Vanity Fair, Golf, bon appétit, and BusinessWeek.

Enjoy the failed marketing campaign and here is the full horrific PR campaign.

“We have a special credit card for all your rich people, you know the ones only losing 3 of your 6 homes”

or how about a new tagline

“Get instant rewards using the Chase Sapphire credit card, you get automatically bumped to first place in the food line”

or this one

“Sapphire, the same color as your blood”

Can’t wait to see the ads.

Buy your Glenn Beck Advertising Cheap!

August 18, 2009

Allergan (maker of Restasis), Ally Bank (a unit of GMAC Financial Services), Best Buy, Broadview Security, CVS, Re-Bath, Travelocity, Wal-Mart, ConAgra, GEICO, Lawyers.com, Men’s Wearhouse, Procter & Gamble, Progressive Insurance, RadioShack, Roche, SC Johnson, Sanofi-Aventis, Sargento, and State Farm Insurance have all removed their advertising from the Glenn Beck show, leaving Joe the plumber and the local “re-elect David Duke campaign” as the last ones standing on the show.

All their respective advertising agencies have been informed not to make any more purchases on the show, and leaving a void in advertising for the show. Evidently rumors are afoot that you can purchase spots on the show for a fraction of the price since so many advertisers have left the show. Some have threatened to leave Foxnews completely.

The Glenn Beck show has turned out to be one of the more contested shows on Foxnews, it’s marginal in terms of who actually agrees with Glenn Beck because clearly Advertisers don’t. It’s was suggested that perhaps Glenn Beck needs a differing network due to the fact that most advertisers choose not to put their money at that show. In essence THEY don’t agree with the content.

Enjoy the circus.

Crispin (CP+B) loses Volkswagen - account thrown into Review

August 17, 2009

We just heard that Volkswagen of America has put it’s business up for review. The account, which we’re told is valued at $220-250 million has been Crispin’s charge since 2005. The agency told us via a statement that they will not defend, despite being invited is being reported by Agency Spy

Of course they won’t defend, they don’t need a quarter of a billion dollar account, Crispin is basking in cash and a small account like F*(CK*ING VOLKSWAGEN is not worth fighting for.

The reason they are not defending is because they won’t win it… they know it.. VW knows it.. it’s just that VW is giving them a way to save face.

Enjoy the BS.. because when an account that size is floating out there and the advertising agency refuses to defend their loss, it’s because they already know that they lost the account.

Casey Jones : Communication breakdown lead to Enfatico Failure

August 17, 2009

The Media Bistro / Agency Spy article points to “a communication breakdown” is what caused the Official Enfatico Countdown clock to go faster than budgeted for.

Not the fact that Enfatico was a horrific Idea to start with.. or that it had serious problems from day one is what caused the failure, not lack of communication… Lack of communication implies that there was something worth communicating about. This was a failure from the day Sir Shorty went up to Michael Dell and signed the contract.

It was publicized at a 4.5 billion dollar project when it was announced, no one (not even Dell or WPP) can really put a dollar figure on what was wasted on the project. Of course there are hard figures, like the 10 year leases that still have 8 years left on them or the fact that Enfatico went on a 1000 employee hiring spree that never reached any of it’s goals.

It’s ugly people, really ugly.. but to blame it on a communications breakdown is nothing less than a cop-out… it was a failed agency to begin with.. you can’t build an advertising agency with a horrible idea. This was the pure definition of horrible idea.

Reader’s Digest Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

August 17, 2009

Clearly print media is hurting, really hurting.. and in this case Reader’s Digest is the latest to take the bankruptcy route. The company announced that it is filing for Chapter 11 and it is going to enter bankruptcy to hold off creditors.

Chapter 11 is now a very popular term when discussing print media organizations. Many newspapers have already gone that route, and many more will continue to go that route.

There are rumblings in Washington about a “print media bailout” which is a horrific idea to start off with as these print organizations are not going bankrupt due to recession / depression . They are going bankrupt due to the fact that the news stories in their print comes out 3-4 days after it was already discussed and is ‘old news’ on Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, forums and was linked to from the Drudge Report and the main page of Digg.

In essence bailing them out is akin to bailing out a candle-maker company because someone invented electric lights.
——
Reader’s Digest Association Inc [RPPLER.UL], publisher of the widely-read Reader’s Digest magazine, said on Monday it would likely file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for its U.S. businesses to cut its debt load.

The media company, known worldwide for its family-friendly namesake magazine, been trying to slash costs and boost growth since it was taken private in 2007 by an investor group led by Ripplewood Holdings LLC.

The bankruptcy would take the form of a so-called pre-arranged filing, Reader’s Digest said in a statement. A pre-arranged filing comes after a company has already reached deals with its lenders to cut its debt. Full Story here

It’s just not worth fixing.

I can see Egypt from here!

August 15, 2009

Clearly Sarah Palin is taking over Foxnews, as this map states that anyone in Iraq can see Egypt… wait.. there is no Iraq. The fact that this was run nearly a month ago and it took a re-run of it for others to catch is raising concern over the quality of Foxnews viewers (much less the actual “news” organization)

For those that are geographically impaired one country was removed and replaced with another, just happens to be a country where we have 160,000 US troops based in, and the other is nation that has nearly 70 million people and hosts the great pyramids.

Enjoy the mindless dribble.
