Orlando gunman, wife exchanged texts during rampage
He correctly called the mass shooting in an Orlando gay nightclub Sunday morning, which killed 49 and injured 53, “an act of terror”.
New reports indicate Omar Mateen was texting his wife, checking Facebook and writing posts about the Islamic State while committing the deadliest massacre in modern American history.
Salmon is cooperating with investigators, but they worry she will stop talking once and if charges are filed.
“This would be the wife who texted “I love you” to this murderer in the middle of his rampage”, one poster wrote.
Authorities say the fatally shot Mateen clearly was prepared to die in a gun battle with police during the June 12 attack, the deadliest act of terrorism on US soil since 9/11. He called a local TV station saying he attacked the nightclub for the Islamic State. Police killed Mateen, 29, a United States citizen born in NY to Afghan immigrants.
But the tip went nowhere because the store didn’t know the man’s name and had no way to lead authorities to him, gun store owner Robert Abell told reporters Thursday.
Little by little, details have begun to emerge about Salman, who grew up in the small suburb of Rodeo, California, tucked in the dry hills near the oil refineries 25 miles northeast of San Francisco.
“The wife was very much involved & should be arrested”, another commented. “She was inside the box, just pack it up and get married”, said Chahal.
She even tried to phone her husband several times during the ordeal.
Authorities are still investigating a motive, but Mateen’s father said he had in the past expressed anger at the sight of two men kissing. “I’m the shooter. It’s me”. Hundreds of students gathered to pray and sing in the evening at the University of Central Florida. But nobody knew his name until after Mateen was identified in the Orlando nightclub attack.
On Wednesday, a has-been actor revived a has-been racist theory that President Obama is secretly a Muslim.
While the debate about guns, radical Islamic terrorism and anti-LGBTQ violence will be at the forefront of discourse in the weeks and months to come, for now, the nation is mourning our dead and treating our wounded. Obama replied that using that label would not accomplish anything.
Mateen responded: “Do you see what’s happening?”
An FBI representative said that Mateen “was organized and well prepared” for the attack, and the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives confirmed that he was armed with an assault-style rifle and a handgun that he had legally bought a few days before.
According to the letter Mateen is believed to have posted updates during the strike on the Pulse nightclub.
“Untrue and totally ridiculous”, spokeswoman Sara Brady said in an email when asked about the claim. “It doesn’t surprise me that he might be gay”.
Now openly gay, McHugh said Mateen’s teasing more than 16 years ago stung deeply enough that she paid him back by kicking him in the crotch.
