David Cameron And Jeremy Corbyn Unite In Tributes To Jo Cox
There was no sign of the acrimonious European Union referendum campaign resuming on Friday as a stunned Britain mourned the murder of popular Labour MP Jo Cox, who had celebrated the presence of Muslims from Gujarat in her constituency in her maiden speech in Parliament previous year.
Police said counter-terrorism officers are also involved in the investigation into the attack which occurred as Cox arrived for a meeting with constituents.
A sombre British prime minister on Friday urged greater tolerance in public debate and recalled parliament to pay tribute to Jo Cox, the MP whose brutal killing has caused shock in Britain and further afield.
The law centre, which is based in Alabama and tracks extremist groups, released receipts showing that Mair had paid $620 for materials from National Vanguard Books, the publishing imprint of the neo-Nazi organisation, called the National Alliance.
Mrs Cox was attacked in the street outside her constituency surgery in Birstall, near Leeds, at lunchtime on Thursday.
The National Alliance, founded in West Virginia in 1974, is perhaps best known for the racist novels of its founder, William Pierce.
“The tragedy here is that Jo was brutally murdered after her constituency surgery, trying to do her democratic duty”, Berry said.
Cox was a former aid worker who had championed the cause of Syrian refugees and campaigned for Britain to stay in the European Union when it votes in a referendum on Thursday.
She said the Brexit debate has brought previously hidden feelings of anger over immigration to the surface.
“The suspension of campaigning for the UK EU referendum after the tragic death of Labour MP Jo Cox boosted risk appetite”, said Nick Stamenkovic, an analyst at broker RIA Capital Markets. The Telegraph cites a 2006 blog post that names Mair as one of the publications earliest subscribers.
Mrs Cox previously spent two years advising former Labour MEP Glenys Kinnock, the wife of ex-Labour leader Neil, before going on to work for charity Oxfam and ex-prime minister Gordon Brown’s wife Sarah.
But police have confirmed it was not the same man who was arrested on Thursday following the attack.
Cox’s death is the first of a lawmaker since politician Ian Gow was killed in 1990 in an attack by the Irish Republican Army.
Britain’s Sky News spoke with Duane St. Louis, reportedly Mair’s half-brother, who said he “recognized him in handcuffs on the ground”.
“We’ll be reviewing our security, but I’ll walk through Barnsley today like every Friday”, said Jarvis, an army veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
