Reid: Clinton and Sanders will have to compromise

Nevertheless, Clinton now has a Herculean task to bring this enthusiastic Sanders crowd, Millennials, college students, who were for the first time part of a political process like this, onboard and take the fight to Trump.

Even before the president endorses, he has been busy laying out the argument against Donald Trump and making it clear he’s champing at the bit and eager to hit the campaign trail. We have never looked up on the walls in our history classes and seen a woman’s face up there alongside George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln. But Clinton, seeking to head off a loss, campaigned exclusively in the Golden State in the days leading up to Tuesday, contributing to her win.

Noting that she was standing under a literal “glass ceiling” inside of a greenhouse, Clinton called tonight’s achievement “a milestone”.

Trump presented himself as the anti-politician, promising that the campaign would not be about “Democrats and Republicans”.

Sanders picked up a win in North Dakota, where a handful of delegates were up for grabs.

“Next Tuesday we continue the fight”, he declared.

Despite the pledge to soldier on, there were signs Sanders was listening.

The White House announced late Tuesday night that President Obama had called both Clinton and Sanders and congratulated Clinton on securing the necessary delegates. But as results continued to roll in, Clinton maintained roughly 55 to 60 percent of the vote in the state throughout the night.

Competing in more than 50 contests since February, Mrs. Clinton has amassed a majority in the race for delegates.

How do United States voters see Clinton and Trump? “They just want to find Bernie a gracious way to get out of this race”. In order to crash through that ultimate glass ceiling, however, the Clinton folks must convince Bernie Sanders and his die-hard supporters that getting together is a good idea.

And: Some expressed frustration that the AP called the race for Clinton on Monday evening, worrying that it would depress turnout in the six states voting on Tuesday.

Mrs Clinton held a commanding lead over Senator Sanders even before Tuesday’s votes, having passed the magic number of 2,383 delegates required to clinch the nomination. Sanders bashed the AP for potentially depressing turnout in California. And you could tell from her body language from the way she addressed her crowd, an absolutely enthusiastic crowd at her headquarters in Brooklyn, New York.

He has said his comments were “misconstrued”. As Republican strategist Scott Reed remembered: “The country had just gone through some very hard times financially and people were upset with the government and I think McCain’s view was ‘I’ve got to run this my way'”.

The Daily Beast spoke to almost a dozen Sanders supporters and staffers on Tuesday afternoon, and found the camp divided between continuing to pursue an exceedingly unlikely scenario in which Sanders convinced superdelegates to switch their allegiances, and voting for Clinton so as to avoid the looming specter of a Trump presidency. Before the New Hampshire primary, I spoke with a Harvard student Osaremen Okolo, who wanted to support Clinton but questioned whether she could excite younger voters. Sanders’ allies will be at the table helping write the party platform and their candidate will get a prime speaking spot at the convention.

“Our vision of social justice, economic justice, racial justice and environmental justice must be the future of America”, Sanders said. “If a lot of people vote for Bernie, you know the mind of the people is changing”.

Democrats do have one more event in this primary cycle, in Washington DC next Tuesday, where a whopping 20 delegates will be at stake.

Trump, who faced no opposition in the GOP primaries, used his perch on Tuesday to debut a more focused general election message - something that will comfort Republicans who were on the defensive over Trump’s comments about the Mexican heritage of a judge presiding over the case involving his controversial Trump University. We will have received well over 10 million votes.

The two leaders of their parties each sought to look presidential - and to undermine the other, kicking off what is expected to be an ugly, highly personal battle for the White House. Her base of older voters and registered Democrats were overrepresented among the almost 3 million ballots that had been cast as of Monday, according to the Southern California firm Political Data Inc.
