Republican Sen. Jeff Flake says he can’t support Donald Trump
Keeping along that line, Trump was asked on the political TV show: “If it was a Muslim judge would you also feel like they wouldn’t be able to treat you fairly because of that policy of yours?”
Mr. Trump has said Judge Curiel has a conflict of interest because he has Mexican ancestry and Mr. Trump has pledged to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Asked about Trump’s assertions that Judge Gonzalo Curiel could not be impartial in the case simply because of his heritage, McConnell responded, “I couldn’t disagree more with a statement like that”. I will not presume to speak on behalf of every American of Mexican descent, for every undocumented worker born in Mexico who is contributing to our country every day or, for that matter, every decent citizen in Mexico. “I don’t think it reflects wells on us as a nation”, Rubio said.
Donald Trump bristled Monday at supporter Newt Gingrich joining the chorus of criticism over his comments on the Mexican heritage of a federal judge - saying it was “inappropriate” for Gingrich to weigh in, while once again defending his remarks.
John Kasich, governor of OH and a former rival of Trump’s, is the latest to raise his concerns about the comments, posting on Twitter that Trump should apologize.
Trump already has rejected calls for him adjust his approach.
“I think we’re - you know, have what we have. Susan Collins said in a statement Monday”. Marco Rubio, “It’s wrong and I hope he stops”.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was also critical of the remarks, although he had previously come out in support of Trump. Curiel was born in IN and served as a federal prosecutor and a judge in the California state judicial system before being nominated to the federal bench by President Barack Obama in 2011.
Keep in mind that Trump did attract support from white nationalist and former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke and took way too long to try to distance himself from it. “I certainly can’t right now”.
Trump stood by that message on Sunday - despite drawing warnings from powerful Senate Republicans.
And Newt Gingrich, who became speaker of the House promising to open the GOP more to minorities, delivered the harshest warning of all.
“The comments he made last week were absolutely unconscionable”, Coleman said.
“He’s a Mexican. We’re building a wall between here and Mexico”, Trump said.
Mark-Viverito is a Democrat and is supporting Hillary Clinton.
