Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part - 2 Earns $101 Millions, the Lowest in the

Still, the movie opened to $101 million, according to studio estimates.

For most films, the figure would be a coup, but the latest chapter of “The Hunger Games” collected the lowest opening take among the four films in the series. The second-highest new arrival in the top five was Seth Rogen comedy The Night Before, which kicked off with $10.1 million, which is perhaps not among the actor's higher openings, but still more than cancer comedy 50/50 - also directed by Night's Jonathan Levine, and co-starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt - took in when it launched back in 2011.

Mockingjay - Part 2 made up for the domestic performance a bit with big openings in worldwide markets, pulling in about $147 million and covering almost every big market, including China.

"Part 2", which is the fourth and final installment in the series based on the books by Suzanne Collins, had the lowest opening weekend gross of any of the "Games" movies.

Expectations run high when films become so popular and successful in such a short a time, said Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst for Rentrak. The "Lord of the Rings" prequel franchise, "The Hobbit", for example, also had declining opening weekend numbers through its trilogy (and none of them ever opened at $100 million of more).

Finalizing the adventure of Katniss Everdeen, the movie came in almost $20 million under "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1" and about $50 million below 2012's "The Hunger Games" ($152 million) and "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" ($158 million) in 2013.

With Mockingjay - Part 2 talking the bulk of the box office this weekend, it offered competition for second place.

He attributed this weekend's showing to a down marketplace.

The Julia Roberts thriller The Secret in Their Eyes, a remake of the Oscar-winning Argentinian film, debuted wide this weekend to US$6.6 million from 2392 locations - slightly under expectations. It cost $19.5 million to produce, and is the latest in a string of films pitched at adult audiences such as "By the Sea" and "Steve Jobs", to whiff at the box office this fall.

"The Peanuts Movie" finished in second place for the second weekend. The final entry in the series is likely to stick around the Top 10 for a few weeks, but won't have the staying power that we saw with the others. The Secret in Their Eyes US$6.6m 6.

Taking the third spot was The Peanuts Movie, grossing $12.8 million and bringing its total to $82.5 million so far.
