Tens of Thousands People March in South Korea Anti-Government Protest

The police set up roadblocks across the main thoroughfare, blocking protesters from marching toward the Blue House and sprayed water canons into the crowd.

Korea's justice minister says violent protesters who were part of a massive anti-government protest in downtown Seoul on Saturday will be receive harsh punishments. "It's hard to figure out exactly how many people participated as multiple rallies happened at once".

A 69-year-old farmer, Baek Nam-gi, remained unconscious at a hospital after he fell and injured his head as police doused him with water cannons near City Hall, said Cho Byung-ok, secretary general of the Korea Peasants League.

Park Geun-hye said in written answers to questions submitted by local and worldwide news agencies that "there is no reason not to hold an inter-Korean summit if a breakthrough comes in solving the North Korean nuclear issue".

Abe and South Korean President Park Geun-hye, when they met earlier this month for their first one-on-one talks since taking office, agreed to resolve the comfort women issue as soon as possible, and Park has urged Japan to present a solution that is "acceptable to the victims and deemed reasonable by the Korean people". A few of them clashed with police, who created tight perimeters with their buses to block them. Police officers additionally fired water cannons from above a transportable wall close by to disperse marchers who have been making an attempt to advance.

Officials also tried, unsuccessfully, to arrest KCTU president Han Sang-goon during a news conference.

Police said the crowd at Saturday's protest was probably the largest at a demonstration in Seoul since May 2008, when people poured onto the streets to protest the government's decision to resume USA beef imports amid lingering mad cow fears.

Although people had diverse complaints, they were united against the conservative government under president Park Geun-hye.

Scuffles erupted when plainclothes police officers tried to detain Han under a court warrant that allowed them to arrest him for organizing illegal protests in the past.

Park Chung-hee was accused of collaborating with the Japanese colonial forces in the early 20th century, and in 1961 he seized power in a military coup and ruled South Korea as the leader of a dictatorship until his assassination in 1979.
