Russian Federation: Keeping Assad in Syria 'not critical'

A Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman softened the country's stance on Syria on Tuesday, saying that "the fate of the president of the country should be decided by the Syrian people".

When asked if saving Assad was a matter of principal for Russian Federation, Zakharova said: "Absolutely not, we never said that".

However, she added in an interview with the Radio Eco in Moscow, "regime change could become a disaster, and not only at a local or regional level". Moscow has said it is helping troops loyal to Assad fight what it calls the "terrorists". Iran is another strong ally of Assad.

"...I think it is very important that everyone, all Syrians should be involved and associated", he said after a meeting with a few senior Syrian officials in Damascus.

Later, she told the TASS news agency that the remarks were not a change in position.

"The meeting... will possibly be with the participation of government representatives", Mr Bogdanov added. He did not say which opposition members would be invited.

Syria's deputy foreign minister rejected the idea of a transitional period sought by Western states that want Assad removed from power, saying during a visit to Iran that an expanded government was being discussed.

The organization noted that it was not yet clear whether the attacks had been conducted by the Russian air force (operating in Syria since September 30) or the US-led worldwide coalition.

The Vienna talks ended last week, aiming to finding a "common ground" regarding the solution of the crisis, but the participants remained divided over the role of President Bashar al-Assad in the future of Syria.

Russian Federation is planning to host talks between Syrian government officials and opposition leaders next week.

"The working Groups are meant to provide Syrians with a platform to address in-depth themes that are certainly not new, but have lacked to date sustained intra-Syrian discussion", he said in July.

However Russian planes had also targeted Palmyra on Monday, said the head of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

However, the number of dead could be higher, he said, as the toll relied on information from only one hospital in the area due to security restrictions.
