Bernie Sanders nabs his biggest labor endorsement yet

Sanders, an independent and self-described democratic socialist, has been battling Clinton for support from labor unions, which provide valuable grassroots political support with their ability to get members to the polls.

The endorsement dealt a blow to Clinton, who has been moving to the left in an effort to win the backing of labor unions.

The announcement came a week after the APWU National Executive Board voted to endorse the Democratic candidate, who addressed the union's All-Craft conference late last month.

"He's a real person as opposed to the rich people who are usually politicians, he's our kind of people, and I think he will be our kind of president", Brooks said. "It's time for a political revolution", said APWU President Mark Dimondstein, echoing a call to action from the candidate. Front-runner Hillary Clinton has attracted a number of major national endorsements, from the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

A new McClatchy-Marist poll shows Democratic presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders leads Republican candidates Donald Trump and Jeb Bush by "landslide margins". The union represents postal workers in all 50 states.

Larry Cohen, a former president of the Communications Workers of America and a senior campaign adviser on labor issues, said that the union was "everywhere there is a post office" and said the membership was "way at the top when it comes to member involvement and union democracy". Before the APWU had made its decision official, the Sanders camp rolled out its New Hampshire steering committee, featuring several postal workers and mail carriers.

Sanders' campaign did not immediately respond to a CNN request for comment Thursday night.

Following the closing of 141 mail-processing plants over the past two years, Sanders reintroduced the Postal Service Protection Act in January, a bill that would impose a two-year moratorium on USPS layoffs and plant closings.

"Thank you all for coming out and standing up for justice, standing up for dignity, and for saying loudly and clearly that people in this country that work 40 hours a week deserve a living wage", he said, speaking in front of the US Capitol building. All told, Clinton has picked up twelve national labor union endorsements to date. Should Sanders' bid fall short, Rousey said she would likely support a third-party candidate?

Capitol' food service and maintenance workers joined contract workers from other areas of the federal government, going on strike to push for a $15-an-hour wage and union representation.
