New CDC Data Blows Away Popular E-Cigarette Criticism

10.5 percent of high school students and 12.7 percent of people aged 18 to 24 use electronic cigarettes, compared with 6.5 percent of those 25 and older.

"This new data are alarming because we know that e-cigarettes and other electronic nicotine delivery systems can establish, maintain and strengthen nicotine addition", said Lindsay Amico, TFEN youth engagement coordinator. "In fact, some studies showed that e-cigarettes contained higher composition of heavy metal than cigarettes", he said.

"It's at a time when cigarette smoking rates among New York youth and young adults, as well as adults are at an all-time low".

In other words, never-smokers rarely become regular vapers, which suggests the CDC's fears are misplaced, especially since there is no evidence that never-smokers who vape are therefore more likely to become smokers or that the rising popularity of e-cigarettes has given a boost to conventional cigarettes.

He said the use of e-cigarettes was increasingly worrying as more vapers were vaping inside air-conditioned public places such as shopping malls and restaurants. Efforts to reduce youth smoking have recently begun to demonstrate positive results. Legislators approved a different bill with a prohibition on sales to those under 18 and other sales restrictions - just like tobacco cigarettes.

The battery-powered devices heat flavored liquid nicotine and other chemicals. It's known as "dual use", and it's a trend that leaves a significant question unanswered. The same survey found that 4 percent of adults were current e-cigarettes users (meaning they vaped "every day" or "some days"), including 16 percent of current smokers, 22 percent of recent quitters, 2 percent of long-term quitters, and just 0.4 percent of never-smokers.

The New York State Health Department Bureau of Tobacco Control released its first ever study Monday about electronic cigarette usage. "We deserve to live free of tobacco and nicotine use, and our future generations deserve it".

According to the Tobacco-Free Erie-Niagara Coalition, dual use reinforces addiction and exposes the brain to more nicotine that can disrupt developing cognitive abilities at key periods in life.
