IRS phone scam spreading across New Mexico

When you get such a call, you should know it is a scam.

The Grayson County Sheriff's Office has been receiving calls from area residents concerned about a recent phone scam.

Arizonans who believe they have been victimized by phone scammers can contact the Attorney General's Office at 602-542-5763 in metro Phoenix or 520-628-6504 in metro Tucson. If you receive an email from someone claiming to be the IRS, then it is probably a hoax.

According to the IRS website, scammers "are able to alter ID numbers to make it look like the IRS is calling".

Victims are told they owe money to the agency and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer.

Thomas Gentner said several cases of an IRS tax scam have been reported over the past several days.

Chief Frederick Ryan and the Arlington Police Department are alerting the public to what they call a new kind of telephone scam that appears to target the immigrant community. Emails that people send may include computer viruses that could harm your computer or access personal information. They say to call the EPD non-emergency line at (541) 682-5111 if you live in Eugene and get a call.

"There's basically no way to stop it beyond educating people and helping them not be victimized". The IRS workers can help with a payment issue. First communication from the IRS always happens via postal mail. Indeed, the IRS will not call you and demand immediate payment on any taxes owed.
