South Carolina Student Arrested

Fields, who did not respond to the fight, led the investigation, and described it as a 'huge gang fight, ' that was an attempt to unite three gangs at the school.

The incident apparently captured on a student's cellphone happened at Spring Valley High School in Columbia.

Deputies said the sheriff wrote to U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles and the FBI requesting a federal investigation. Another adult is standing nearby.

After the teacher asked for the phone and the student refused, an administrator was called to the classroom and "pleaded" with her to get out of her seat. The officer then grabbed the girl by her arm and neck, dragging both she and the desk before the desk flipped over. He then drags the girl around the room before pinning her face down with her hands behind her back.

No one was hurt in Monday's confrontation, which officials said occurred after the student at Spring Valley High School refused Senior Deputy Ben Fields' order to leave the classroom for being disruptive.

Jackson says he agrees with Sheriff Leon Lott that federal authorities should investigate. Robinson said he'd "never seen anything so nasty, so sick" and the incident made the other students afraid for their lives.

Fields was named in a still-pending lawsuit filed in 2014 accusing him of unfairly targeting black students.

"That was wrong. There was no justifiable reason for why he did that to that girl". Fields tells her, "Come on, I'm going to get you up", and tries to pull her from the desk. The student who recorded the incident Tony Robinson Jr. explained what happened leading up to the violent arrest.

Lott pointed out at a news conference that the girl can also be seen trying to strike the officer as she was being taken down, but said he's focused on the deputy's actions as he decides within 24 hours whether Fields should remain on the force.

"It's very disturbing what happened today".

"Just because she was wrong in what she was doing doesn't make what he was doing completely right also", the sheriff said. According to the student, Fields then shut the girl's computer, and moved it to another desk. The student in the video along with another female student were charged with disturbing the school.

As to Fields, he's on administrative duties and won't return to Spring Valley High at least until the department's investigation into the incident finishes.

Reports the nydailynews: Martin said the beefy officer "snapped" after he called him "dude", and slammed him on the ground.

Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin called for an independent investigation of the confrontation.

In a statement, the Richland Black Parents Association said they were "heartbroken as this is just another example of the intolerance that continues to be of issue in Richland School District Two particularly with families and children of color".
