Migrants held in the rain near Slovenian border

Croatia wants Slovenia to take in around 5,000 people each day traveling through its territory but Slovenia is only willing to accept half of that number. Although there was no agreement between the Croatian police and their Slovenian colleagues, the train continued towards Slovenia and stopped at Trnovec, 200 metres from the border.

Around 2,700 people were admitted to Slovenia from Croatia on Saturday.

That isn't popular with all her supporters. Although the border has been closed to what officials are calling "economic migrants", law enforcement will still allow asylum seekers to cross the border.

"If we would accept 5,000 migrants per day that would mean 35,000 would be in Slovenia in 10 days", he said. Sefic says "that would be unacceptable".

The migrants - many from Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan - have spent walking from Turkey, via Serbia, Macedonia and Greece. The number of people arriving into Croatia from Serbia fell to a third of recent volumes. Tensions rose as the Croatian police deployed along the boundary to stop them. The group stared, eyes vacant with exhaustion, at nearby Croat cornfields as the man, who gave only his first name, Less, lit a cigarette with shaking hands. It is expected that the influx of migrants from Serbia will continue.

Slovenia became the main route for migrants after Hungary closed its borders to them on Friday night, citing security concerns.

The train carrying a few 1,800 people arrived in the early hours of the morning Monday.

Pressure from the refugee crisis mounted elsewhere on the continent.

The miserable wave of humanity left behind a field scattered with soaked blankets, mud-caked clothing and water-logged tents as they headed for Slovenia, the next obstacle to their quest to reach richer European Union nations via the Balkans.

The bishops sent the letter to Cameron in September, but released it publicly after failing to receive what they described as an adequate response.

Slovenian Prime Minister Miro Cerar said on Saturday that "since Slovenia is a transit country, it will introduce stricter rules on border, if same is implemented by other states".

"It will be a lot of trouble for all countries and I can not predict what will happen in this situation", Ostojic, speaking in English, told reporters at a migrant camp in the eastern Croatian village of Opatovac.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel told Saturday's edition of the daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that Germany can control its borders but not close them completely - "that wouldn't even succeed with a fence, as the example of Hungary shows".

Over 383,000 migrants have entered Hungary this year, almost all passing through on their way to Germany and other destinations further west in the EU.

Merkel was in Turkey Sunday which is already taking care of more than 2 million refugees from war.

"The decision by Hungary to close its border has certainly added to the suffering and misery and the length of the journey for these desperate people".

Long lines have also formed on Croatia's border with Serbia.

Croatian police allowed about 300 people to come to the border and they entered Slovenia at the Banfi border crossing.
