Hungary border closure redirects migrants through Europe

Buses packed with migrants backed up on Serbia's border with Croatia on Sunday, their passage to western Europe slowed by a new diversion through Slovenia, which vowed to limit the influx. The first train arrived on Saturday evening, carrying 1,200 people travelling from the eastern Croatian town of Tovarnik.

Over 2,600 migrants entered Austria from Slovenia over the weekend and thousands more are expected to arrive during Monday.

"We are continuously monitoring the situation at the Slovenian, Croatian and Serbian borders, and are ready to react to any situation which might develop", said Kovacs. "Very cold. Inshallah, I am going to Germany".

More than 5,000 refugees were waiting at a temporary reception center in Croatia, according to police data, while dozens more waited in neighboring Serbia to be allowed across the border, the Tanjug news service reported.

The Slovenian interior ministry warned on Sunday it would be forced to slow down the rapidly rising influx of migrants. However, despite the warning, Croatian authorities officially informed Slovenia that on Monday about 1,800 migrants will be sent to Slovenia.

Slovenia, a small country of 2 million people, says it will allow in as many migrants as it is able to register and accommodate and put the army on standby to aid the effort.

But Croatia retorted that it, too, was being unfairly burdened by unrelenting flows from Serbia, where United Nations officials estimate another 10,000 asylum seekers - more than double the summer's typical flow - are now traveling north to Croatia.

The latest news as migrants fleeing war or seeking a better life make their way across Europe by the tens of thousands.

"Nobody can stop this flow without shooting", Ostojic said, adding that further closure of frontiers for migrants would cause "a domino effect and lot of troubles for all countries" that are on the migrant route. Hungary closed its southern border with Croatia Friday night as European Union members had failed to find a solution to Europe's worst migrant crisis since World War II. Without that, his government said it was left with no choice but to seal the border.

He has said normal border checkpoints with Croatia would remain open, though inspections will be tightened. Slovenian minister talked with her Croatian counterpart and asked for the Croatian side to cooperate and respect the number of refugees that Slovenia can receive. Slovenia is in the Schengen zone.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has met Turkish leaders in a bid to agree a plan that could help stem the mass movement of migrants into Europe. While most of the migrants in Calais are from Sudan and Eritrea, more are arriving from Iran, Syria and Iraq, the spokesman said.
