United States 'drunk driver' kills 4 at university rally

Four people died, including a toddler, when an allegedly intoxicated young woman drove her vehicle into onlookers at Oklahoma State University's homecoming parade. Dozens more were injured in the collision that sent a few spectators flying through the air.

UCO Pres. Don Betz confirmed that UCO MBA student, Nikita Prabhakar of Mumbai, India was among the fatalities at OSU.

He added that students come to Central Oklahoma university with their unique goals, hopes and dreams, and "Nikita was undoubtedly no different".

Police identified the victims as Nakita Prabhaker, 23, of Edmond, Bonnie Stone, 65, of Stillwater, Marvin Stone, 65, of Stillwater and 2-year-old Nash Lucas, from Stillwater.

Dr Marvin Stone had been a professor at Oklahoma State University before retiring in 2006.

In Stillwater, Okla., on Saturday, that festive scene turned horrific when a vehicle plowed into the crowd, killing four people - including a 2-year-old boy - and injuring 47.

The scene was a typical one at college towns across the country in the early fall. And then about two hours later, it hit me.

Of the 47 people treated after the crash, 17 remained hospitalized and five were in critical condition, police said. According the CNN, 11 of those injured were under the age of 13.

Several of those physically impacted by the frightful act have been transported to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City. CNN also reports that one of the women who was killed pushed seven-year-old Madison Atwell out of the way at the last moment, saving the her life. She sustained broken ribs, a bruised lung and internal bleeding.

Tasha also posted that Madison is suffering from a head wound which doctors will now have to staple or stitch shut.

She had been attending Saturday's parade with friends, Hargis said.

Madison Atwell, 7, had five broken ribs and a bruised lung from the crash, her family told KJRH. Another 12, including six children, remained in six hospitals in the Oklahoma City-Tulsa-Stillwater area.

Her lawyer, Tony Coleman, told The Oklahoman newspaper he believes his client is mentally ill and doubted she was drunk at the time of the crash. This is not the person that's my daughter.

'I can't imagine alcohol being involved. She is not an alcoholic.

Konda Walker, an OSU graduate who was in Stillwater with her sister to celebrate homecoming, said she was only about 50 feet from the crash scene.

"They're going to paint her into a terrible person but this is not (her)", he said.

Williams, who is certified in CPR and first aid, said he helped those injured until emergency responders arrived.

"As we learn more about those killed and injured in what was a senseless and incomprehensible act, our hearts ache from the weight of the grief we feel, ' Oklahoma State President Burns Hargis said in a statement Saturday night".

"At first we thought it was part of the show", Walker told the News Press. "Students greatly appreciated Dr. Stone's teaching and mentoring, and in retirement he has continued his involvement with the department", the description of the fund says.

"Oklahoma State University is saddened by the tragic parade incident earlier this morning".

"I heard a boom, I thought it was a bomb", he said.

The accident occurred at the corner of Hall of Fame and Main Street, a very populated area just two blocks from the football stadium.

According to OSU, Chambers is not a student.

Payne County District Attorney Laura Austin Thomas said that Chambers is now being held on four manslaughter charges, and will likely be charged with driving under the influence of drugs. Everyone was quick to make the "Go Pokes - Pistols Firing" hand gestures. However, the decision was made to play the game in honor of the victims.
