Slovenia Gives Army More Power Amid Migration Crisis

Firefighters managed to extinguish flames, but not before the blaze consumed several tents. Officials pointed out that the much larger and richer neighbor Austria was on its part, taking in just 1500 people a day. "Armenpress" reports about this, citing BBC.

Many of those at the camp had arrived in the dark of night after wading or swimming across the Sutla River in temperatures close to freezing.

"Slovenia will formally ask for additional police forces to guard the border between Slovenia and Croatia and for financial help", he said.

Monday's surprise move allowed an estimated 3,000 more migrants to enter Croatia bound for its small Alpine neighbor, which also has been struggling to slow the flow of humanity across its frontiers - and faced another wave of trekkers seeking to reach Austria and Germany to the north.

Attempts by Slovenia to ration the flow of asylum seekers since Hungary sealed its border with Croatia on Friday have triggered a knock-on effect through the Balkans, with thousands held up at border crossings.

"The inflow of migrants over the last three days has exceeded all manageable possibilities", the Slovenian government said in a Tuesday statement, adding, "The last 24 hours have been the toughest and most demanding since the start of the crisis".

(Vatican Radio) With the migrant crisis continuing unabated in Europe, Slovenian lawmakers have ratified a law granting more powers to the army in managing the migrant influx along the border of the Balkan country.

Refugees who spent the night at the Berkasovo-Bapska border crossing in tents or under tarpaulins provided by aid groups burned bonfires to warm themselves up.

Police eventually convinced them to return to the checkpoint and wait for buses provided by the government to transport them toward Germany. He asserted that Croatia was admitting people twice as quickly from Serbia.“If we are receiving 10,000, then 5,000 people have to be transited to Slovenia, ” he told The Associated Press in an interview near the Serb-Croat border.

"Europe is our only hope because all the Arab countries have shut their doors to us".

Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier told reporters in Berlin on Wednesday that "we have to make sure, first of all, that the movement of refugees doesn't carry new conflicts into a region where we have worked so hard in recent years to the calm the conflict situation after the dissolution of Yugoslavia". Why is Europe like this?'

Arduous: Their journey has been made more hard after Hungary erected fences protected by razor wire, police and soldiers on its southern borders, forcing migrants to find new routes west.

But a draft plan submitted to countries coming to the Brussels summit by European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker was already drawing strong opposition.

Between 8,000 and 9,000 people arrived in Slovenia yesterday, according to local media, after a long and gruelling trek through Greece, Macedonia Serbia and Croatia.
