President Rouhani assures Iran's supreme leader on nuclear deal

Nevertheless, in an astounding example of twisted logic, White House Press Secretary Josh Ernest said that Iran's violations of UN Security Council resolutions regarding its missile program are "not new" and should be viewed as "entirely separate" from the nuclear deal itself.

The US planned to raise a recent missile test by Iran at the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday, accusing it of violating a United Nations ban on tests of nuclear-capable missiles.

We are concerned about the military significance of this test, which is part of a long-term Iranian program that seeks to improve the range and capabilities of its ballistic missiles.

The deal, once implemented, will lift all nuclear-related global sanctions against Iran, in return for stringent curbs on its nuclear programme, including its enrichment of uranium.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani moved today to dispel concerns voiced by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei over Iran's landmark nuclear deal, insisting Tehran would carry out its obligations while monitoring the actions of world powers.

The agreement outlines the phased sanctions relief that will be given only upon confirmation by the global Atomic Energy Agency that Iran is fulfilling its nuclear commitments.

Khamenei claimed that U.S. President Barack Obama had promised that the US had no intention of ousting Iran's leadership, but he said Obama lied and is still "backing internal conspiracies".

However he told Rouhani the deal had "many ambiguities and structural weak points" which must be closely monitored.

While the agreement - brokered with Iran by the USA, the United Kingdom, France, China, Russian Federation and Germany - stipulates that sanctions are to be lifted, older measures are to remain in place. The USA ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, has said that the medium-range missile was capable of delivering a nuclear weapon. The test was Iran's first since the deal was reached in July. Iran's parliament passed a bill supporting the deal last week. Iran denies ever working on such arms and says its present nuclear program is meant only to generate power and for science and medicine. Those restrictions on ballistic missile technology will be in place for eight years.

Khamenei says the US government took an approach of "hostility and disturbance" in the negotiations and "is unlikely to do otherwise in the future either".

Under the agreement, the IAEA would investigate Iran's past weaponization work and any possible continuation of those activities prior to the full implementation of the JCPOA.
