United States floods derail train in Texas

A Union Pacific freight train has derailed in flooded North Texas, near Corsicana, where the tracks washed away. The two crew members swam to safety and nobody was hurt, he said.

The area is in the midst of torrential rainfall, and received a total of 16½ inches of rain Friday alone.

One man was missing in San Antonio after being swept into a drainage ditch by flood waters as he walked his dog early Saturday, officials said.

National Weather Service meteorologist Kurt Van Speybroeck said as the hurricane moves inland, the mountains of Mexico "will shred Patricia apart", but the weakened system will continue moving north and eventually bring another round of rain to Texas before moving into Arkansas, Louisiana and beyond. The dog is safe.

The NWS is warning that another 6-8 inches of rain could fall in the area on Saturday, and more is expected as the remnants of Hurricane Patricia move northeast.

At one point during the night, Interstate Highway 45 was shut down due to flooding.

The flash flood watch covers all of Bexar County and surrounding counties taking affect at 7 a.m. Friday and running through Sunday when forecasters are predicting the rain will wane.

Corsicana is 60 miles south of Dallas. Roads are slick, and flooding is possible through tonight. Also Boerne, Hondo, Castroville, Comfort and Wimberley, the latter was heavily effected by heavy rains over the Memorial Day weekend.

"His girlfriend said she saw him go underwater and then she lost sight of him", said Christian Bove of the San Antonio Fire Department.

Heavy rains swamped much of the state overnight, and rising floodwaters forced the evacuation of a few residents in Navarro County where the derailment occurred.

Travelers aren't out of the woods yet though, as heavy rains are expected to continue through the weekend.

Flight tracker flightaware.com reported that about 100 flights have been canceled today at Dallas-Fort Worth global Airport.

Water was ponding in the usual low spots along creeks and on area roadways this morning, and the flood risk will increase as the ground grows more and more saturated, Johnston said. The National Weather Service says water levels could reach almost 5 feet above normal astronomical tides, and officials are concerned that the high storm tides and heavy rainfall could result in access to the peninsula being cut off.
