MCAS Miramar-based F-18 crashes in United Kingdom, pilot killed

The U.S Marine corps F-18 has crashed near a British air base in Eastern England leaving the pilot killed, confirmed both U.S and British officials. It was returning to the USA via Britain after combat in the Middle East, the Telegraph said.

The crash occurred near the Royal Air Force's base at Lakenheath, reports Cambridge News.

A US F-18 fighter jet has crashed near a British air base killing the pilot, according to police and the US Embassy in London.

A spokesman said: "We can confirm one fatality and believe there was just one person on board the aircraft".

Matthew Barzun, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom, said in a twitter message: "The loss in Cambridgeshire today is awful news, my thoughts & prayers are with all involved".

"We are hearing reports and we are awaiting further information about it", said a spokeswoman for RAF Lakenheath.

The unnamed aviator died after ejecting from the cockpit of his single-seat F/A-18 Hornet aircraft.

They entered active duty in January 1983 and have recently been used in conflicts in the Iraq and Afghanistan.

Resident Patrick Turner said he heard the plane overhead but could not see it because of low cloud cover.

Emergency services were sent to the scene near the Cambridgeshire/Suffolk border. The Telegraph wrote that the plane was one of six flying together and failed to connect with a tanker for aerial refueling after leaving the air force base.

A post on the RAF Mildenhall page added: "Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the pilot".

Officials are investigating the cause of the crash.

Karen Miles-Holdaway, 48, who lives nearby, said: "I was in my garden when I saw the plane going over". However, they tell through this statement, it is not confirmed whether the pilot had moved out from the aircraft.
