Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders tied among likely New Hampshire

Going into the Democrats' first presidential debate Tuesday night, Hillary Clinton seems to have banked on one thing: that far fewer Americans would be watching than watched the Republican debates in August and September.

The poll was conducted October 14-15, surveying 500 likely Democratic primary voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.

LGBT comments made by the Kentucky senator were mischaracterized on social media by excluding context. That's less than what she raised in the early months of her campaign, but more than any previous non-incumbent Democratic presidential primary contestant in the third quarter of the year before Election Day. It came when CNN moderator Anderson Cooper interjected himself into the debate by asking Clinton for the umpty-umpth time about her inexcusable email scandal.

Sanders was scheduled to attend a taping of "The Ellen Degeneres Show", which has become a popular stop for presidential hopefuls. At the time, though, Clinton - who now says she opposes the deal - said it "sets" the gold standard.

The other three Democratic candidates had net scores in negative territory, with former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley at -6, former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee at -21 and former Sen. An NBC News/Survey Monkey poll of Democrats who watched or followed news coverage of the debate found that 56% thought Clinton prevailed, compared to 33% for Sanders. The fact that he's drawing huge crowds, including one in excess of 20,000 people in South Carolina, says to me that Bernie Sanders, like Donald Trump, has struck a nerve among American voters.

"Clinton's willingness to engage Sanders on gun control established her progressive credentials", David Paleologos, the director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center, wrote in a release.

Meanwhile in New Hampshire, Jeb Bush told a town hall that Sanders was "just warming up" when it came to tax and spending proposals.

So given that, how can news outlets and their assembled punditry perpetrate The Big Lie in something like a nationally televised debate?

"I doubt Republicans would actually make a concerted effort to undermine him unless he's the nominee", Kondik said.

In another sign of its maturing operation, the campaign has hired Democratic pollster Ben Tulchin, whose past clients have included former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, who ran for president in 2004, former California Gov. Gray Davis and Sen.
