EDF and Chinese partners ink deal to take forward Hinkley Point C

Prof. David Elmes with Britain's Warwick Business School said that the project is supposed to prompt a new wave of Chinese investment in British energy infrastructure, noting that it is the first project in the British government's plans for a series of new nuclear power stations.

In October 2013, following the signing of a new memorandum of understanding on nuclear cooperation by Britain and China, the UK Treasury confirmed that Chinese companies could eventually become majority stakeholders in new United Kingdom nuclear plants, although initially they are only anticipated to take minority stakes.

With such developments ongoing, "China and the United Kingdom are increasingly becoming an interdependent community of shared interests", said Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

EDF chairman Jean-Bernard Levy said: "We are planning for a final investment decision within weeks so that we can move forward with construction".

PARIS- Electricite de France SA may announce in the coming days an agreement with its Chinese partners to build two nuclear reactors in the United Kingdom, the first in the country in over a generation, the French utility's chief executive said Sunday.

The Hinkley Point project has come under fire over its cost and the delays to investment decisions and the timetable for building.

It is understood the deal could be the precursor for a further new plant in Bradwell, Essex, which would be delivered entirely by Chinese companies.

One is China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN).

Operating part of the United Kingdom power grid could provide China with information that would give it more insight into its weak spots, Baylon added.

An announcement is expected during his four-day visit confirming Chinese investment in the new power station.

On the project known as Bradwell B, agreements were signed for construction of a third generation HPR1000 reactor customized for Britain, but based on the Fangchenggang power plant's Unit 3-4 in China. "Hinkley Point C will kick start this and is expected to be followed by more nuclear power stations", said Britain's Energy Minister, Amber Rudd, in a statement. "At the same time this is also a triple-win for the existing nuclear energy partnership between China, France and the United Kingdom".

In the first half of this year, Chinese investment in the United Kingdom fell sharply - just $1.8bn compared with more than $8bn in the whole of 2014.
