It looks sort of like facebook on steroids. It’s easy to use, plenty of drag and drop rather than menu selections, it’s actually fairly fun. However on mobile devices it’s less than useable. I’m sure they will fix that.
The interface allows access to plenty of other google products, IE: Google IM’s service is there, access to mail is sitting there.. and tons of status updates from friends, newer friends and family.
The problem I have with it is though it’s easier to use than facebook, many people can’t join so it’s limited in terms of who can participate in the discussions.
When it’s completely open however, I fully expect it to be a serious competitor to Facebook, if anything it’s interface alone makes it a valid competitor.
