In 2040 (about 29 years) on February 2 at 5:16 AM there is a *1 in 3,570 (number has been revised since this article) chance that AG5 will hit Earth. The 140 meter sized asteroid could unleash a similar (most likely much greater) level of destruction than the Tunguska Event in 1908 NASA is reporting
EDIT: NASA has upgraded the threat to 1 :625 chance from 1 : 3,570 . This asteroid has increased it’s potential threat rather than decrease as was expected.
The Tunguska Event was an explosion over Russia roughly 1,000 times more powerful than the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan. This one can cause severe damage that will alter global weather conditions for years. The localized devastation would be off the charts.
It’s not a extinction level event, but people most likely wouldn’t want to be within 500-1000 miles of the impact.
The problem is very seldom do these asteroids make it past zero on the Torino Scale. Currently the only one listed is AG5 on the scale. The other asteroid that is of concern is AR85
The chances are much lower than AG5 , but the near earth object is nearly 20 times the size, and would be an extinction event impact if it does hit.
Enjoy the new reality.
