Google launches goo.gl – url shortener
December 14, 2009
Google has launched http://goo.gl , the new Google Branded URL Shortener. Google URL Shortener is currently available for Google products and not for broader consumer use. Meaning it works well for Google products, but not as a TinyURL type service, at least not yet.
It’s unsure why Google adopted this as there has yet to be a revenue model for the service, other than to collect more information on who links to who via Twitter and their recent real time adoption of Twitter’s search… we guess that makes it all the worth while.
Twitter’s venture capital firm, also invested in bit.ly, and Facebook today launched their URL shorting service called fb.me — it’s worth noting that the Google Announcement comes roughly 2 minutes after the facebook one.
Currently virtually every large social media site has adopted their own URL shortening service, and it’s not for direct revenue, but it appears rather to have a more robust way of tracking clicks and “who goes where”.
Not sure if we are happy with the development.
