New Fad : Submit a virus and malware app directly to Digg

November 30, 2007

Generally speaking Digg is one of my favorite sites. Until I get this… I clicked on an upcoming story, it opens wine and attempts to run a windows executable.

Looking deeper I found that it wasn’t even the URL that was submitted. It appears that the malicious author of the post submitted what would be considered a fairly interesting wordpress article… then after submitting it modified his .htaccess file to redirect to the malware.

So the site cleared all the normal checks for the submission, it gained a few diggs and rose in the upcoming stories, then it was switched to malware.

I of course reported the post to Digg, and I am not going to let everyone know what the malware page is on… the last thing you need is more viruses anyway on your box.

Classic Bait and switch, what’s innovative with it is that the person actually waited until the story was on upcoming before he did his switch. My fear is that he will wait next time until it hits the main page.
