Chrome Grabs 1% Market Share in One Day

One of our favorite blogs Statcounter has broke the story. It appears that Google’s Chrome has grabbed 1% market share in 24 hours.

The StatCounter analysis was conducted today, Wednesday, 03 September 2008, and was based on a sample of 18.5 million page views globally. The analysis identified that Internet Explorer holds 70% of the global browser market followed by Firefox with 22%.

Now we are fairly sure that it was mostly people testing it out.. and we expect this to fall just like our thoughts regarding Cuil in which we challenged Statcounter to revisit their statistics 2 weeks later, in which they did (thank you Statcounter).

However we don’t expect this to be a long decline, in fact we expect it to fall for a short period of time as people “get over” the testing phase.. then slowly gain… as some people do like it.

Also worth noting, generally we don’t like to “blog spam” on Digg… and in this case we are not… for the simple fact that we ran a similar analysis on our clients… roughly 1.2 million views during the exact time frame using both Webtrends and Google analytics… and our figures match theirs within reason. 68% of the global browser market followed by Firefox with 20% and Chrome at just under 1%. The rest were Safari and a few others.

Meaning that it’s very possible within a year we will be seeing 3-4 major browsers, Firefox, IE, Safari and Chrome… and it’s also possible for Chrome to see a double digit market share in that time frame.

In other words, a freaking nightmare for web developers as testing to see if “this works in this” or if “that works in that” has just increased by 1 browser… you heard it here first… make sure your sites render properly in Chrome.. because otherwise you will look bad in the clients eyes within 12 months.
