statcounter.com has been down for days
June 1, 2008
Statcounter.com one of the most popular statistics programs that has a following near that of Google Analytics has been down for days. During a short period today the site was up, and displaying this message.
This is fairly upsetting since we ourselves opt to use statcounter.com as our primary source of stats. We have secondary stats that we use ourselves, but we do normally enjoy statcounter due to it’s ease of use.
We do not have an expected ETA on when the service will be up. Some rumors have been circulating (without merit we might add) that the service might NEVER come back up. However we cannot verify that.. and the sources we have heard it from are questionable.
Update: It appears that Theplanet.com, a managed hosting provider faced an explosion that virtually killed 9000 servers. We ourselves host at INetU… so our servers are up perfectly.. however since we reference statcounter.com (they appear to be hosted there) it’s the reason you are seeing an ‘endless hourglass’.
Update 2: This is the message now posted on Statcounter.com
Due to an explosion in The Planet Datacenter at the weekend, service on this
partition was interrupted. Depsite our best efforts 24 to 30 hours of stats
spread across Sunday GMT and some of Monday morning have been lost. We sincerely
apologise for this. More information is available in the Service Status section of the forum.
Story is developing…

Got something to say?

Thank you for posting this. Some of us were not able to catch the message earlier.
Wow, that’s kind of sad that they don’t have a solid disaster plan. Did you lose stats? I like gostats, it’s great and I’ve never had any problems. (I have tried statcounter and it seems that gostats is a super upgrade :D
I lost a ton of stats!
Hi all,
I’m just dropping by to say how desperately sorry we are that any of our members were affected by the recent outage. Our forum remained live throughout the problems and we posted continuous updates there. In case you haven’t seen it, there is a full explanation and apology on our blog: http://blog.statcounter.com/?p=91
We really appreciate your patience as we worked through the recent difficulties.
All the best!
Jen it wasn’t your fault.. no one reasonable should be upset over this.. it’s not like you controlled the explosion at theplanet.
I would strongly suggest INetU and I find their services highly reliable.

Statcounter has far worse problems then any mere argument with PayPal or anyone else! Their entire site went down in early July 2008, after being in business for 8 years on the net. (I had been using them for the last 6.)
Without any warning, all my pages went blank where the Statcounter numbers should be showing, and link pages to them, even including their blogs, now all either come up blank or redirect to an unrelated fake search engine company.
Just look at Alexa, and you’ll see that their graph chart for Statcounter clearly shows visits to the Statcounter site started dropping like a rock in July.
So what happened to Statcounter, anyway? I heard something in June about them converting to some improved system then, but that should have long since taken effect. If it didn’t work, why didn’t they just stick with their current version? At any rate, it’s a total mess, and I have yet to get even ONE email from Statcounter about this!
I can only assume at this point that they’ve gone out of business.
